Article Synopsis
  • Diethylstilbestrol (DES) and bisphenol-A (BPA) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that cause long-lasting epigenetic changes in the uterus and are linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in women.
  • The study examined how these chemicals affect the expression and function of EZH2, a protein related to breast cancer, in both cultured cells and the mammary glands of mice exposed to these chemicals in utero.
  • Results showed that both DES and BPA significantly increased EZH2 levels and trimethylation of histone H3 in treated cells and mouse mammary tissue, suggesting that early exposure to these compounds can lead to detrimental epigenetic changes in the mammary gland.

Tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO) is expressed in endometrium and catabolizes tryptophan, a precursor in the biosynthesis of serotonin. Tryptophan metabolism is an important mechanism for regulation of serotonin levels. Preimplantation mouse embryos are known to express serotonin receptors, specifically the 5-HT1D and 5-HT7 serotonin receptor subtypes.

Article Synopsis
  • An abnormal decrease in placental weight is associated with serious perinatal issues like intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) and fetal growth restriction (IUGR).
  • Current methods for assessing placental weight prenatally using advanced three-dimensional imaging are costly and complex.
  • A new approach using two-dimensional ultrasound allows for quick and simple estimation of placental volume, showing a strong correlation with actual placental weight, indicating potential for routine use in prenatal care to reduce complications.
