Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs frequently cause adverse reactions. This retrospective study was based on analysis of the data obtained from interviews conducted with 173 patients, who underwent and tolerated a challenge test with etoricoxib (a selective cyclooxigenase 2 enzyme inhibitor). Only one of 82 patients who were treated with etoricoxib reported reactions.

To test that the FHBL phenotype was a result of impaired hepatic secretion of mutant apoB proteins, we performed transfection studies using McA-RH7777 cells stably expressing wild type or mutant forms of human apolipoprotein B-48 (apoB-48). All mutant proteins displayed varied impairment in secretion, with G912D the least affected and A31P barely secreted.

Mixed lipidic vesicles were prepared with one of the most used cationic lipid (DOTAP) and different amounts of a cholic acid (UDCA) to release the oligo into HaCaT cells. Using flow cytometry, the cellular uptake of the oligo was studied with and without different inhibitors able to block selectively the different pathways involved in the internalization mechanism.

The current multistep carcinogenesis models of colon cancer do not fully capture the genetic heterogeneity of the disease, which is additionally complicated by the presence of passenger and driver genetic alterations. The presence of HPV 16 E6*I/E6*II spliced transcripts, in cervical lesions of different grade, was analyzed to characterize the transcription pattern. The presence and amount of spliced transcripts were correlated with DNA viral markers such as E2/E6 ratio and physical state. The detection of HPV 16 E6*I/E6*II mRNAs was set up by an SYBR Green real-time reverse transcriptase PCR assay with an optimal dynamic range and sensitivity.

Objectives: The necessity to genotype and quantify HPV-DNA in cervical screening programs, in the follow up post-surgical treatments and in monitoring the effectiveness of HPV vaccination programs, requires access to economical, high-throughput and flexible molecular technologies.
A novel nonaqueous nanoprecipitation method was proposed to achieve the encapsulation of a small weight hydrophilic drug (N(6)-cyclopentyladenosine, CPA) in PLGA nanoparticles using a mixture of cottonseed oil and Tween-80 as nonsolvent phase. The nanoparticles were characterized in vitro as concerns size, morphology, drug loading, drug release, and drug stability in human blood. Human retinal pigment epithelium (HRPE) cells were employed to study intracellular accumulation of encapsulated or free CPA with and without unloaded particles, in the presence or absence of an equilibrative nucleoside transporter inhibitor.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: Although colonoscopy is effective in screening for colorectal cancer, its high cost and low compliance rates have encouraged a search for different methods. Our study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of rectal cancer detection using a nonlinear tuneable oscillator (TRIMprob), a recently developed device for detecting differences in electromagnetic properties of cancerous and normal tissues.
Methods: We tested 228 patients (115 male and 113 female) between March and September 2006: 114 patients with rectal cancer diagnosed on colonoscopy and 114 patients with negative colonoscopy results.
Background: Shiftwork among health care workers impacts upon the safety and health of both employees and patients.
Aims: To characterize shiftwork-related attitudes, behaviours, symptoms and coping strategies among health care workers, two validated questionnaires (the Standard Shiftwork Index and the Pressure Management Indicator) were used to identify factors predicting shiftwork adaptation.
Methods: Participants (n = 376, response rate 25%) were grouped according to their work schedule (days, permanent evenings, rotating days plus evenings, permanent nights or relief and combined shifts).
The presence of HPV 16 E1 and E2 genes was detected in cervical cytological samples using polymerase chain reaction assays. A total of 48 samples were analyzed from patients with HPV 16 infections associated with 13 low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and 35 high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Disruption/deletion sites, within E1 and E2 genes, were detected using 6 primer pairs spanning the entire gene sequences.

Methods: A modified ECRHS questionnaire was administered to 194 soccer players divided by age as Beginners (8-11 years), Juniors (12-16 years) and Under 21 (17-20 years) to evaluate the prevalence of allergic diseases and symptoms as well as drug consumption. Subjects with a positive personal history of allergic diseases underwent skin prick and/or patch tests.

ABL results from mutations in the MTP gene; Ho-FHBL may be due to mutations in the APOB gene.
Methods: We sequenced MTP and APOB genes in three Tunisian children, born from consanguineous marriage, with very low levels of plasma apoB-containing lipoproteins associated with severe intestinal fat malabsorption.
