Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide proof of concept for at-home measurements of the tinnitus spectrum.

Method: Nineteen participants completed pitch similarity ratings in the laboratory and at home. All participants first completed laboratory tests (at 500-16000 Hz) and then later completed at-home tests (at 250-8000 Hz) using their own personal computers and headphones.

Wearable ExoNETs offer a novel, wearable solution to support and facilitate upper extremity gravity compensation in healthy, unimpaired individuals. In this study, we investigated the safety and feasibility of gravity compensating ExoNETs on 10 healthy, unimpaired individuals across a series of tasks, including activities of daily living and resistance exercises. The direct muscle activity and kinematic effects of gravity compensation were compared to a sham control and no device control.

Molecular simulations of auto-dissociation of water molecules in an 81,000 atom bulk water system show that the electric field variations caused by local bond length and angle variations enhance proton transfer within ∼600 fs prior to auto-dissociation. In this paper, auto-dissociation relates to the initial separation of a proton from a water molecule to another, forming the HO and OH ions. Only transfers for which a proton's initial nearest covalently bonded oxygen remained the same for at least 1 ps prior to the transfer and for which that proton's new nearest acceptor oxygen remained the same for at least 1 ps after the transfer were evaluated.

Sustainably derived poly(glycerol adipate) (PGA) has been deemed to deliver all the desirable features expected in a polymeric scaffold for drug-delivery, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, self-assembly into nanoparticles (NPs) and a functionalisable pendant group. Despite showing these advantages over commercial alkyl polyesters, PGA suffers from a series of key drawbacks caused by poor amphiphilic balance. This leads to weak drug-polymer interactions and subsequent low drug-loading in NPs, as well as low NPs stability.

This work investigates the processability of hot-work tool steels by wire-arc additive manufacturing (DED-Arc) from metal-cored wires. The investigations were carried out with the hot-work tool steel X36CrMoWVTi10-3-2. It is shown that a crack-free processing from metal-cored wire is possible, resulting from a low martensite start (M) temperature, high amounts of retained austenite (RA) in combination with increased interpass temperatures during deposition.

Duplex stainless steels exhibit an excellent combination of corrosion resistance and strength and are increasingly being manufactured through powder metallurgy (PM) to produce large, near-net-shaped components, such as those used for offshore applications. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is often used for PM production, in which pre-alloyed powders are compacted under high pressures and temperatures. Recent developments in HIP technology enable fast cooling as part of the process cycle, reaching cooling rates comparable to oil quenching or even faster.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between orthopaedic trainees using various preoperative training platforms (physical simulation [PS], virtual reality [VR], and reading/videos) in a slipped capital femoral epiphysis model.

Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: (1) reading/video control group (n = 7), (2) VR group (n = 7), or (3) PS group (n = 7). Participants in the VR group completed a VR slipped capital femoral epiphysis module while participants in the PS group practiced the placement of a screw in the physical module before evaluation of percutaneous screw placement in the PS model.

This study was designed to examine age effects on various auditory perceptual skills using a large group of listeners (155 adults, 121 aged 60-88 years and 34 aged 18-30 years), while controlling for the factors of hearing loss and working memory (WM). All subjects completed 3 measures of WM, 7 psychoacoustic tasks (24 conditions) and a hearing assessment. Psychophysical measures were selected to tap phenomena thought to be mediated by higher-level auditory function and included modulation detection, modulation detection interference, informational masking (IM), masking level difference (MLD), anisochrony detection, harmonic mistuning, and stream segregation.
