Background & Aims: MRI guidance offers better lesion targeting for microwave ablation of liver lesions with higher soft-tissue contrast, as well as the possibility of real-time thermometry. This study aims to evaluate the correlation of real-time MR thermometry-predicted lesion volume with the ablation zone in postprocedural first-day images.
Methods: This single-center retrospective analysis evaluated prospectively included patients who underwent MRI-guided microwave ablation with real-time thermometry between December 2020 and July 2023.
Background: Quantitative real-time MRI-based temperature mapping techniques are hampered by abdominal motion. Intrascan motion can be reduced by rapid acquisition sequences such as 2D echo planar imaging (EPI), and inter-scan organ displacement can be compensated by image processing such as optical flow (OF) algorithms. However, motion field estimation can be seriously affected by local variation of signal intensity on magnitude images inherent to tissue heating, potentially leading to erroneous temperature estimates.

Infective endocarditis with negative blood cultures (BCNIE) accounts for more than 20% of cases of infective endocarditis. Perivalvular extension of the infection represents the most detrimental complications of BCNIE.

Methods: We report data from a prospective observational study conducted on MHV patients in the Khartoum Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery built by 'Emergency,' an Italian Non-Governmental Organization, to evaluate the occurrence of PVD and associated risk factors.
Results: We prospectively followed 3647 patients, and 38 patients (rate 1.
Background: Interventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide a comprehensive setting for microwave ablation of tumors with real-time monitoring of the energy delivery using MRI-based temperature mapping. The purpose of this study was to quantify the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) real-time MRI temperature mapping during microwave heating in vitro by comparing MRI thermometry data to reference data measured by fiber-optical thermometry.
Methods: Nine phantom experiments were evaluated in agar-based gel phantoms using an in-room MR-conditional microwave system and MRI thermometry.
Background: The risk of recurrence for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is high, and the current methods of predicting it rely on clinical and histopathological markers. Personalized risk assessment can be improved by including new prognostic biomarkers. Our research explores the potential of urinary metabolomics to predict cancer recurrence in NMIBC patients within three years.

Methods: We report data of a prospective observational cohort study conducted between August 2018 and September 2019 in MHV patients in the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery built in Khartoum by Emergency, an Italian Non-Governmental Organization, to evaluate bleeding risk, its associated determinants, and the impact of lifelong anticoagulation in fertile women.
Occurrence of right atrial masses, especially in patients with history of cardiac surgery, is rare. Differential diagnosis between malignant and non-malignant aetiologies might be cumbersome, and surgery is often required to prevent complications or disease evolution. We report the case of a 16-year-old girl from a rural area of Sudan, who underwent surgery for a modified De Vega's tricuspid annuloplasty, and mitral and aortic valve replacement with mechanical prostheses.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm was detected on computed tomographic angiography of two male patients who were followed up after reporting symptoms of abdominal pain, malaise, and fever of unknown origin. One of the patients' aneurysm was repaired with a tubular graft and the other patient had endovascular aneurysm repair due to his high co-morbidity. From pre-operative cultures and a pathological examination of the surgical specimens, it was observed that the aneurysms had developed in the abdominal aorta due to Salmonella enterica, and broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was started.

Such a complication can be life-threatening and require immediate surgical treatment. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who suffered a sudden dehiscence of the aortic suture line in the context of deep sternal wound infection, while in the surgical intensive care unit after a double valve replacement.

Objectives: Sickle-cell disease (SCD) patients are considered to be at high risk from open-heart surgery. This study assessed the role of a simple sickling-prevention protocol.
Methods: Perioperative non-specific and SCD-specific morbidity and 30-day mortality are investigated in a retrospective cohort study on patients undergoing isolated mitral valve surgery.
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic flatworms (blood fluke) of the genus Schistosoma. Parasites acquire most nutrients for their development and sustainment within the definitive host either by ingestion into the gut or across the body surface. Over the years, the best conditions for long-term maintenance of parasites in vitro have been thoroughly established.

In this article, we report on a humanitarian project by the NGO EMERGENCY, to build and run the Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Sudan. This hospital is a center of excellence offering free-of-charge, high-quality treatment to patients needing open-heart surgery for advanced rheumatic and congenital heart disease.

Metabolite identification and quantification by this method result in a higher accuracy compared to the use of the two techniques separately, even in urine, one of the most challenging biofluids to characterize due to its complexity and variability. We quantified a total of 165 metabolites in the urine of healthy subjects, patients with chronic cystitis, and patients with bladder cancer, with a minimum number of missing values.

Molidustat is an oral inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) prolyl-hydroxylase enhancing the erythropoietin (EPO) response to HIF; it is in clinical development for the treatment of anaemia related to chronic kidney disease. The predominant role of glucuronidation for molidustat clearance (formation of N-glucuronide metabolite M1) and subsequent renal excretion was confirmed in a human mass balance study, with about 85% of the drug being excreted as M1 in urine. The inhibitory effects of 176 drugs and xenobiotics from various compound classes on the UGT-mediated glucuronidation of molidustat in human liver microsomes (HLMs) were investigated.

Praziquantel (PZQ) is today the only drug used in humans and animals for the treatment of schistosomiasis but unfortunately it is poorly effective on larval and juvenile stages of the parasite. Therefore, it is urgent the discovery of new drug targets and compounds.

One hallmark of trivalent N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)-conjugated siRNAs is the remarkable durability of silencing that can persist for months in preclinical species and humans. Here, we investigated the underlying biology supporting this extended duration of pharmacological activity. We found that siRNA accumulation and stability in acidic intracellular compartments is critical for long-term activity.

The absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of molidustat were investigated in healthy male participants. In study 1, a mass balance study, radiolabelled molidustat 25 mg (3.57 MBq) was administered as an oral solution (n = 4).

Methods: Forty-two healthy men received molidustat alone (fasted or fed) or combined with oral iron(II) or calcium(II), given immediately before or between 4 h before and 1 h after molidustat in three randomized, open-label, crossover studies (12-15 participants per study). Molidustat AUC and C were assessed as the main pharmacokinetic parameters, and endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) was measured to evaluate pharmacodynamics.
The diagnosis and management of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) remains a challenge in clinical trials in drug development. The qualification of emerging biomarkers capable of predicting DILI soon after the initiation of treatment, differentiating DILI from underlying liver disease, identifying the causal entity, and assigning appropriate treatment options after DILI is diagnosed are needed. Qualification efforts have been hindered by lack of properly stored and consented biospecimens that are linked to clinical data relevant to a specific context of use.
