Healthcare Provider Communication Patterns during Consultations about Treating Localized Prostate Cancer.

Background: Disparities in mortality in prostate cancer may reflect differences in healthcare providers' communication.

Objective: This study examined physicians' communication with African American and Caucasian men when making decisions about treatment for localized prostate cancer to determine whether information-giving and partnership-building behaviors varied by the age, education level, and race of the patient.

Methods: The study was a secondary analysis of data from a larger study examining decisionmaking among men with prostate cancer.

Examining the effectiveness of a case management program for custodial grandparent families.

Researchers have identified complex needs of custodial grandparent families and lack of access to needed resources such as housing, financial and legal assistance, and health care. Case management links these families with needed services while helping them develop skills to promote their health and well-being. This paper describes a case management program for custodial grandparent families using a nurse-social worker case management team.

Building nursing research capacity to address health disparities: engaging minority baccalaureate and master's students.

In order to decrease health disparities, nursing needs to promote opportunities for minority nursing students to incorporate the conduct, as well as the utilization, of research into their professional careers. This article describes a model program to facilitate minority research career development, the Research Enrichment and Apprenticeship Program (REAP). REAP was developed and implemented by a federally funded partnership between 2 historically Black universities and a research-intensive university.

Factors associated with future offending: comparing youth in grandparent-headed homes with those in parent-headed homes.

This study examined risk factors for reoffending by youth in grandparent-headed homes and those in parent-headed homes. Using data abstracted from the juvenile justice records of youth in a variety of living arrangements, we compared the records of 29 youth living in grandparent-headed homes with those of 37 youth living in parent-headed homes. Youth in grandparent-headed homes were significantly more likely to have risk factors and needs associated with reoffending.

Examining the influence of coping with pain on depression, anxiety, and fatigue among women with breast cancer.

Breast cancer treatment can have a profound influence on a woman's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue, and fear of recurrence are common responses to a diagnosis of breast cancer and undergoing breast cancer treatment. Women develop their own coping strategies for the pain and other effects of treatment.

Factors affecting use of the mental health system by rural children.

As many as 20% of children between the ages of 0 and 18 meet the criteria for one or more mental disorders at some point in their lives, with about one half of these being described as being seriously disturbed. Only about one-third of these children and adolescents receive help from the mental health system. Negative outcome expectations toward the mental health system can prevent use of services.
