The aim of this experiment was to find out whether the taurine supplementation in daily ration had an effect on quantity or quality of Duroc boar ejaculate. The experiment duration was from June to August, when it could assumed the possible occurrence of heat stress. For the study was chosen 12 Duroc boars of approximately the same age and condition.

Article Synopsis
  • Selenium plays a significant role in boar fertility, with research having evolved from its bioavailability to include nanotechnology in supplementation studies.
  • An experiment with 21 Duroc boars divided into three groups tested the effects of inorganic selenium and selenium nanoparticles on semen antioxidant parameters over 126 days.
  • While both forms of selenium improved certain antioxidant measures, selenium nanoparticle supplementation did not enhance sperm quality, suggesting it could be a safe alternative to inorganic selenium while boosting antioxidant properties in boar semen.

Article Synopsis
  • Animal nutrition significantly affects the productivity and sustainability of livestock, with a focus on optimizing organic minerals like selenium (Se) in their feed.
  • Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have gained attention for their unique properties that improve nutrient delivery, but they also pose toxicity risks, such as weight loss and higher mortality rates in animals.
  • This review discusses the benefits and potential dangers of SeNPs, aiming to provide guidance on safe levels for animal feed to enhance performance while ensuring safety for animals, humans, and the environment.*

Background: Development of new nanomaterials that inhibit or kill bacteria is an important and timely research topic. For example, financial losses due to infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, are a major concern in livestock productions around the world. Antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs) represent a promising alternative to antibiotics and may lower antibiotic use and consequently spread of antibiotic resistance traits among bacteria, including pathogens.

Background: Selenium is an essential element; however, at higher doses, it can be toxic. Therefore, alternative nanotechnological solutions are required to overcome toxicological issues, rather than conventional alternatives. Nanoparticles show new and promising properties that may be able to suppress toxicity while maintaining the positive effects of selenium on an organism.
