Background: Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) is characterized by higher lymphocytic infiltration, which predicts sensitivity to immunotherapy. However, there are few studies investigating the mechanisms of acquired resistance to programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade and its subsequent treatment strategies for EBVaGC.

Case Description: We describe the case of a patient with EBVaGC who was initially treated with first-line chemotherapy plus Sintilimab, a fully humanized anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, resulting in a near-complete response.

In this study, the absolute electrostatic charge of myofibrillar protein (MP) was substantially increased by protein-glutaminase (PG) treatment, which was a critical step for achieving the dissociation and solubility of MP under low salt condition. The PG-treated MP exhibited the capacity to form thermo-reversible gels that could be melted through heating and subsequently reformed into a stable gel structure upon refrigeration. The results of SDS-PAGE further revealed that the levels of soluble monomeric myosin and actin in the supernatant of deamidated MP (DMP) gels were markedly elevated, and confirmed the increased formation of intermolecular disulfide bond between myosin and actin.

Background: Many patients with cancer exhibit primary or rapid secondary resistance to targeted therapy (TT). We hypothesized that a higher number of altered oncogenic signaling pathways [pathway alteration load (PAL)] would reduce the benefit of TT which only intervenes in one pathway. This hypothesis was tested in the Drug Rediscovery Protocol (DRUP).

  • Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) can significantly improve lettuce growth that is stressed by harmful substances like phenanthrene and cadmium, promoting better biomass and root length while reducing cellular damage.
  • The application of ZnO enhances the movement of zinc to various plant parts, regulating metabolic pathways and microbial communities, which indicates its potential for improving plant health and resilience in contaminated soils.
  • Metabolomic analysis shows that ZnO not only influences key metabolic processes in leaves but also increases beneficial bacterial populations in both plants and the surrounding soil, suggesting a robust strategy for sustainable agriculture in areas affected by heavy metal pollution and PAHs.

Sulfonamides (SAs) are one of the major emerging contaminants of concern, but comparative studies on the degradation of different types of SAs are still limited. This work comprehensively compared the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfathiazole (STZ) under UV light in peracetic acid (PAA) from both experimental and theoretical aspects, as they represent two structural classes based on substituent differences. The two SAs with five-membered heterocyclic substituents (SMX, STZ) generally decomposed at faster rates, with SMX degrading up to 10 times faster than SDZ (pH = 3; PAA dosage = 80 mg/L).

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is a common photocatalyst for water remediation, yet its powder form renders difficult to disperse, recycle, and regenerate, limiting photodegradation efficiency. In this study, a lignocellulosic-templated BiVO photocatalyst was fabricated from BiVO precursor and lignocellulose using a simple vacuum impregnation (w/o heat treatment on wood template). Results showed that the modified template retained original hierarchical structure with an increased specific surface area and reduced hemicellulose content, leading to a promising template for uniform distribution of BiVO.

Article Synopsis
  • REEP6 is overexpressed in OSCC (oral squamous cell carcinoma) and is linked to larger tumor size and poor survival rates, indicating its oncogenic role.
  • The research shows that REEP6 overexpression inhibits ferroptosis, a process that typically leads to cell death, by affecting ER homeostasis and modulating ACSL4 expression.
  • Promoter DNA hypomethylation is identified as the reason for increased REEP6 levels, suggesting that this mechanism contributes to OSCC progression by preventing ferroptosis through ER stress pathways.

This study examined the effects of incorporating milk protein concentrate (MPC) or pea or soy proteins isolates (PPI and SPI) on the physicochemical, sensory properties, and AA composition of ice creams containing 7% protein, compared with dairy ice cream as a reference. As protein ingredients, PPI exhibited higher water- and oil-holding capacity but lower surface hydrophobicity than SPI and MPC. The viscosity of the mixes was proportional to the firmness of the ice cream, and both were highest with use of PPI.
