Forty-four patients with high titers of anti-RNP antibodies, without anti-Sm or anti-nDNA antibodies, were studied retrospectively for clinical symptomatology, morbidity and mortality. Seven had died. Eleven had renal disease.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwo hundred and eighty two first and second molar teeth from 100 dry mandibles of South African Negro skulls were scored by four degrees of severity of furcal involvement. The severity was judged by whether the furca was involved from one or both sides, by the depth of the defect on each side and by the sum of the depths of the defects on both lingual and buccal sides. Analysis of the frequencies of the scores show that: (1) First molars are more severely affected than second molars; (2) There is a general trend of scores 1 and 2 (normal and mild involvement) to be predominant in the 3rd decade of life, while by the 5th, 6th and 7th decades scores 3 and 4 (moderate and severe involvement) predominate; (3) The difference between the frequencies of all the scores for the right and left sides was not significant.

The effects of cryotherapy on widespread leukoplakia of the buccal and vestibular mucosa were observed clinically and studied histologically. The treated areas were clinically normal 2 months after treatment, and discomfort and inconvenience of treatment were minimal. The epithelium, which was initially orthokeratinized, with mild dysplasia, and which was almost entirely lacking in glycogen, reverted to the parakeratinized or non-keratinized form, with normal distribution of glycogen in the stratum spinosum.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo summarize, the principles and the application of an apparatus have been described which without appreciable physical restraint provides graphic representations of the movements of a point on the mandible in three conventional anatomic planes-sagittal, coronal, and horizontal. The apparatus also provides data which permit an estimation of the magnitude and direction of movement of a point on the jaw during function in relation to time. This information prepares the way for the calculation of the path of the selected point in space, as well as its mean velocity and acceleration.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new method of recording the movements of a point on the mandible appears to be a valuable addition to the many means which are available for attempting to fathom the secrets of jaw movements. While in its present form this method does not fully describe any of the movements of the jaws, the over-all patterns recorded may be of significance.
