Purpose: Based on CARS Congress events selected from its 40 year history, this editorial summarises the main challenges and solution concepts encountered, and what the future may hold for a model-centric world view in the specific domain of computer assisted radiology and surgery.
Methods: Altogether some 15,000 publications appeared in the CAR/CARS Congress Proceedings and Journal between 1985 and 2025, comprising approximately 3000 full papers and 12,000 long abstracts. Modelling occupied a central theme in many of these publications, particularly in the 2020s.
Disorders across the affective disorders-psychosis spectrum such as major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), schizoaffective disorder (SCA), and schizophrenia (SCZ), have overlapping symptomatology and high comorbidity rates with other mental disorders. So far, however, it is largely unclear why some of the patients develop comorbidities. In particular, the specific genetic architecture of comorbidity and its relationship with brain structure remain poorly understood.

Neuroimaging studies have shown mood-congruent alterations in amygdala activity in patients with acute depression, even during early, automatic stages of emotion processing. However, due to a lack of prospective studies over periods longer than 8 weeks, it is unclear whether these neurofunctional abnormalities represent a persistent correlate of depression even in remission.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: This editorial relates to a panel discussion during the CARS 2023 congress that addressed the question on how AI-based IT systems should be designed that record and (transparently) display a reproducible path on clinical decision making. Even though the software engineering approach suggested for this endeavor is of a generic nature, it is assumed that the listed design criteria are applicable to IT system development also for the domain of radiology and surgery.
Methods: An example of a possible design approach is outlined by illustrating on how to move from data, information, knowledge and models to wisdom-based decision making in the context of a conceptual GPT system design.
To fully exploit ultra-short X-ray pulse durations routinely available at X-ray free-electron lasers to follow out-of-equilibrium dynamics, inherent arrival time fluctuations of the X-ray pulse with an external perturbing laser pulse need to be measured. In this work, two methods of arrival time measurement were compared to measure the arrival time jitter of hard X-ray pulses. The methods were photoelectron streaking by a THz field and a transient refractive index change of a semiconductor.

This prospective controlled trial compared 12-week postoperative outcomes for immediate unprotected weightbearing (IMWB) vs nonweightbearing (NWB) for 2 weeks in a splint followed by weightbearing as tolerated (WBAT) in a boot after surgical fixation of selected low-energy ankle fractures without superior articular involvement.
Methods: Eighty-seven patients undergoing surgical fixation of ankle fractures at a single level 1 trauma center were recruited according to specific criteria and enrolled by presentation date.
Quantifying the dynamics of normal modes and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance in condensed matter. Spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-T superconductivity, and topological materials. However, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete.

At first glance, the relatively narrow bandwidth and the highly fluctuating spectral structure of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) sources seem to require accumulation over many shots to achieve high data quality. To date the best approach to implementing XAS at XFEL facilities has been using monochromators to scan the photon energy across the desired spectral range.

However, diffusion tensor imaging studies in biological relatives have presented contradicting results on WM alterations and their potential as biomarkers for vulnerability or resilience.
