The GATA2 gene encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor that acts as a master regulator of normal hematopoiesis. Mutations in GATA2 have been implicated in the development of myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Using RNA sequencing we now report that GATA2 is either mutated with a functional consequence, or expressed at low levels in the majority of normal karyotype AML (NK-AML).

Background: Marine omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) reduce plasma triglyceride (TG) levels. Genetic factors such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) could be responsible for the variability of the plasma TG response to n-3 PUFA supplementation. Using structural magnetic resonance imaging in a clinical scanner at 3.0T, we describe results showing that following 12weeks on a diet of 2% cholesterol, rabbits experience a significant increase in the volume of the third ventricle compared to rabbits on a diet of 0% cholesterol. Using time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography, we find cholesterol-fed rabbits also experience a decrease in the diameter of a number of cerebral blood vessels including the basilar, posterior communicating, and internal carotid arteries.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of Ramadan fast on appetite sensations, nutritional intakes and body weight in Malians with type 2 diabetes. Appetite sensations were assessed before Ramadan and then at the second, ninth, and sixteenth days of Ramadan (period). The anti-proliferative activity of a series of ester- and amide-linked Inhoffen-Lythgoe side chain analogues is reported. Whereas the Inhoffen-Lythgoe diol was inactive in these studies, a number of aromatic and aliphatic ester-linked side chains demonstrated modest in vitro growth inhibition in two human cancepar cell lines, U87MG (glioblastoma) and HT-29 (colorectal adenocarcinoma). Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies demonstrated the most active aromatic (13) and aliphatic (25 and 29) substituted analogues were approximately equipotent in U87MG and HT-29 cells.

SCL/TAL1, a tissue-specific transcription factor of the basic helix-loop-helix family, and c-Kit, a tyrosine kinase receptor, control hematopoietic stem cell survival and quiescence. Here we report that SCL levels are limiting for the clonal expansion of Kit⁺ multipotent and erythroid progenitors. In addition, increased SCL expression specifically enhances the sensitivity of these progenitors to steel factor (KIT ligand) without affecting interleukin-3 response, whereas a DNA-binding mutant antagonizes KIT function and induces apoptosis in progenitors.

This study compared the effects of 3 palatable juices enriched with different polysaccharides with a control nonenriched juice on glucose and insulin responses as well as on appetite sensations and determined whether the polysaccharide-induced viscosity contributed to the effects of enriched juices on these variables. Using a randomized crossover design, 14 healthy male subjects consumed 4 juices: 3 juices were enriched with either xanthan gum, β-glucan, or a mix of xanthan gum and β-glucan, and the control juice had no added polysaccharides. Viscosity was measured at a shear rate of 30 s(-1), which represented an approximation of the viscosity in the gastrointestinal tract.
