We describe the unexpected challenges pediatricians may experience when children conceived with assisted reproduction are diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. A local case series triggered a dialogue between many stakeholders with varied expertise. Sialidosis is an ultra-rare multisystemic lysosomal disease caused by mutations in the neuraminidase 1 (NEU1) gene. The severe type II form of the disease manifests with a prenatal/infantile or juvenile onset, bone abnormalities, severe neuropathology, and visceromegaly. Aim: To study the incidence, risk factors and management of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) after hepatectomy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCC).

Patients And Method: Single-center retrospective analysis of 86 consecutive patients who underwent major hepatectomy for PHCC, between 2012 and 2019, with comparison of the characteristics of the groups with (PVT+) and without (PVT-) postoperative portal vein thrombosis.

Results: Seven patients (8%) presented with PVT diagnosed during the first postoperative week.

Arsenic exposure is correlated with atherosclerosis in epidemiological studies and in animal models. We have previously shown that arsenic exposure enhanced the atherosclerotic plaque size, increased the plaque lipid content, and decreased the plaque smooth muscle cell and collagen contents in the apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE-/-) mice. However, the percentage of plaque-resident macrophages, the primary drivers of atherosclerosis remained unchanged.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and C3 glomerulopathy/immune complex membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis are ultra-rare chronic, complement-mediated diseases with childhood manifestation in a majority of cases. Transition of clinical care of patients from pediatric to adult nephrologists-typically with controlled disease in native or transplant kidneys in case of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and often with chronic progressive disease despite treatment efforts in case of C3 glomerulopathy/immune complex membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis-identifies a challenging juncture in the journey of these patients. Raising awareness for the vulnerability of this patient cohort; providing education on disease pathophysiology and management including the use of new, high-precision complement antagonists; and establishing an ongoing dialog of patients, families, and all members of the health care team involved on either side of the age divide will be inevitable to ensure optimal patient outcomes and a safe transition of these patients to adulthood.

New alkyl ether carboxylates with a glyceryl spacer instead of ethylene glycol units have been synthesised using environmentally friendly methodology. A cascade synthesis of acetalisation and hydrogenolysis was developed to obtain products containing an alkyl chain linked to a glycerol unit bearing a polar carboxylate head. These products were methylated by using trimethyl phosphate to observe the influence of a free or methoxylated alcohol on the physicochemical properties.

We describe the structural and magnetic properties of a tetranuclear [2 × 2] Co4 grid complex containing a ditopic arylazo ligand. At low temperatures and in solution the complex is comprised of Co3+ and singly reduced trianion-radical ligands. In the solid state we demonstrate the presence of valence tautomerization via variable temperature magnetic susceptibility experiments and powder-pattern EPR spectroscopy.

Objective: We aimed to further elucidate the phenotypic spectrum of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) depending on genotype.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients seen in the TSC clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children was conducted and the frequency of TSC manifestations was compared based on genotype.

Results: Nineteen-patients had TSC1 mutations, 36 had TSC2 mutations and 11 had no mutation identified (NMI).
