Islet transplantation and more recently stem cell-derived islets were shown to successfully re-establish glycemic control in people with type 1 diabetes under immunosuppression. These results were achieved through intraportal infusion which leads to early graft losses and limits the capacity to contain and retrieve implanted cells in case of adverse events. Extra-hepatic sites and encapsulation devices have been developed to address these challenges and potentially create an immunoprotective or immune-privileged environment.

Volumetric bioprinting has revolutionized the field of biofabrication by enabling the creation of cubic centimeter-scale living constructs at faster printing times (in the order of seconds). However, a key challenge remains: developing a wider variety of available osteogenic bioinks that allow osteogenic maturation of the encapsulated cells within the construct. Herein, the bioink exploiting a step-growth mechanism (norbornene-norbornene functionalized gelatin in combination with thiolated gelatin-GelNBNBSH) outperformed the bioink exploiting a chain-growth mechanism (gelatin methacryloyl-GelMA), as the necessary photo-initiator concentration was three times lower combined with a more than 50% reduction in required light exposure dose resulting in an improved positive and negative resolution.

Ischaemia impairs organ quality during preservation in a time-dependent manner, due to a lack of oxygen supply. Carbonate apatites are sought as a bone substitute due to their biocompatibility and excellent resorbability. The present study deals with Cowrie's shell derived powder (CSDP) as natural biomaterial for bone regenerative medicine. Structural and physicochemical analysis showed that Cowrie's shells, presenting brick and mortar microstructures, were mainly composed of aragonite crystals, which were converted into poorly crystalline B-type carbonate apatite once soaked, at 37 °C, in simulated body fluid for 7 days, reflecting bioactive features.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) enriched with strontium and boron ions was synthesized using two different methods: the precipitation method (Sr,B-HAw) and the dry method (Sr,B-HAd). This delay is largely explained by the adoption of a European regulation on clinical trials on medicinal products that will probably not be applicable until October 2018.
