Semiconductor materials used as photocatalysts are considered among the most effective ways to treat biologically polluted water. Certainly, efficiency depends on the selection of photocatalyst and its substrate, as well as the possibility of its application in a broader spectrum of light. In this study, a reactive magnetron sputtering technique was applied for the immobilisation of ZnO photocatalyst on the surface of HDPE beads, which were selected as the buoyant substrates for enhanced photocatalytic performance and easier recovery from the treated water.

Photocatalysis application is considered as one of the most highly promising techniques for the reduction in wastewater pollution. However, the majority of highly efficient photocatalyst materials are obtained as fine powders, and this causes a lot of photocatalyst handling and reusability issues. The concept of the floating catalyst proposes the immobilization of a photocatalytic (nano)material on relatively large floating substrates and is considered as an encouraging way to overcome some of the most challenging photocatalysis issues.

The anatase phase TiO films with nanocrystalline structure were successfully deposited on a water-floating non-expanded polystyrene (PS) beads via magnetron sputtering. The combination of UVB light and PS beads with TiO film was used for decomposition of methylene blue as well as inactivation tests for intact and EDTA-treated Escherichia coli bacteria. Crystal structure, elemental composition, elemental mapping, surface morphology and chemical bonds of TiO film were investigated.

In this study, cobalt (Co) was recycled from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and used to synthesize cobalt ferrite (CoFeO-LIBs), which was applied as a catalyst for heterogeneous photo Fenton reactions that discolored methylene blue (MB) dye. The co-precipitation method was used to synthesize CoFeO-LIBs and CoFeO-R nanoparticles with spinel structures using as raw materials of the LIB cathodes and commercial reagents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified the formation of spinel-type CoFeO, which formed clusters that could be seen under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and nanometric particles seen under transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of desmopressin to behavioral modifications as the initial treatment of primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). Study results determined that either intervention led to a significant reduction in PMNE episodes. These results suggest that either method is equally effective for treatment of PMNE.

Aim: To assess the efficacy and tolerability of lactic acid (Lactacyd vaginal gel; LVG) when given as an adjunct to metronidazole in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) among Filipino patients.

Methods: A multicenter, open-labeled, controlled, randomized, three-arm comparative study on 90 women aged 18 years or over with clinically and microbiologically proven BV.

Results: The lactobacilli colony count significantly increased over time in all three arms.

A clinical case that occurred in a 42 years old female and which fulfils the diagnostic criteria for the entity described as Heat Stroke is presented. In this case, besides the usual manifestations of hyperpyrexia without sweating along with consciousness disorders, features of consumptive coagulopathy, rhabdomyolysis and well marked laboratory liver dysfunction have also been found. The severity of this situation and its less common occurrence in temperate climates, together with the uncertainty in establishing the diagnosis, namely when infection is suspected--in the present case the initial diagnosis was Sepsis, which led to patient's admission in an infectious diseases intensive care unit--motivate the authors to make this report.
