Article Synopsis
  • - **Study Focus**: The research investigates how effectively adolescent men who have sex with men (MSM) clear human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA and antibodies, aiming to fill the gap in understanding this demographic’s HPV clearance.
  • - **Methodology Overview**: 183 MSM participants were enrolled, and HPV DNA and antibody tests were conducted at multiple intervals over 12 months to determine rates of definite and possible clearance for various HPV genotypes (6, 11, 16, and 18).
  • - **Key Findings**: The results showed varying clearance rates for HPV DNA across anal and penile sites, with clear discrepancies in the clearance of antibodies, indicating low agreement between the two clearance methods.

Background Sexual transmission accounts for a substantial proportion of HIV infections. Although some countries are experiencing an upward trend in HIV infections, there has been a lack of studies assessing the global burden of HIV/AIDS acquired through sexual transmission. We assessed the global, regional, and national burdens of HIV/AIDS acquired through sexual transmission from 1990 to 2019.

Background: Observational studies suggest that voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) may lower HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is needed to confirm this.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of VMMC in preventing incident HIV infection among MSM.

The uptake of COVID-19 booster vaccination among older adults in China is suboptimal. Here, we report the results of a parallel-group cluster-randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of promoting COVID-19 booster vaccination among grandparents (≥60 years) through a health education intervention delivered to their grandchildren (aged ≥16 years) in a Chinese cohort (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR2200063240 ). The primary outcome was the uptake rate of COVID-19 booster dose among grandparents.

Background: This study aims to assess the global incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of thyroid cancer between 1990 and 2030.

Methods: Our study analysed Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 data from 204 countries, spanning 1990-2019. It focused on age-standardised thyroid cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), using the sociodemographic index (SDI) for assessing socioeconomic levels.

Background: Mpox, one of the most serious threats to global health, is now being seen in small but rising numbers in Beijing, China. Our study aimed to investigate healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge of Mpox and to explore reasons associated with their hesitancy to vaccinate against Mpox in Beijing, China.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among HCWs in Beijing from July 24 to August 2, 2023, through an online questionnaire.

Background: During a vaccination plateau phase, traditional vaccination promotion strategies such as the mobilization of government and community appear to have limited impact on expanding the coverage. New strategies to promote vaccination are needed especially in older adults. Our study aimed to assess college students' intention to encourage coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination among their grandparents and its correlates.

Article Synopsis
  • Sexually active older adults (ages 60-89) are increasingly vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to health issues and low condom usage; a study aimed to analyze these trends globally from 1990 to 2019.
  • The research collected data on HIV and various STIs from the Global Burden of Diseases Study across 204 countries, assessing incidence rates and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) to understand the impact on older populations.
  • Findings revealed that in 2019, there were approximately 77,000 new HIV cases and over 26 million new cases of other STIs among older adults, with a slight annual decline in HIV rates, while other STIs showed stable

Monkeypox (mpox), a viral zoonotic disease, is spreading worldwide. However, evidence that informs prevention and control strategies in the Asia Pacific Region is very limited. Our study aims to investigate the experiences of mpox patients from infection to treatment to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control.

Article Synopsis
  • A study on confirmed mpox cases in China collected data from 115 men diagnosed between June 1 and July 31, 2023, revealing that 90.3% identified as homosexual and 56.5% were HIV-positive.* -
  • Common symptoms included fever (73%), lymphadenopathy (49.6%), and skin lesions, with primary genital lesions found in the majority of cases, suggesting sexual contact transmission is likely.* -
  • The study also noted higher anxiety levels among HIV-positive individuals, indicating a potential mental health impact related to mpox, and emphasized the need for updated guidelines on hospitalization and isolation for mpox patients.*

Introduction: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is increasingly prevalent and has significantly heterogeneous risks of survival for diagnosed individuals due to the inter-related risk factors. Precise prediction of the risk of survival for an individual patient with OPSCC presents a useful adjunct to therapeutic decision-making regarding the management of OPSCC. The aim of this systematic review, critical appraisal and meta-analysis is to assess prognostic prediction models for OPSCC and lay a foundation for future research programmes to develop and validate prognostic prediction models for OPSCC.

The association between HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) has not been well documented. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of PrEP on the prevalence, incidence, and clearance of anal HPV among men who have sex with men (MSM). Sexually active, HIV-negative MSM aged 18 years and older in Xinjiang, China since September 1, 2016, were enrolled in an ongoing observational cohort study of HPV.

Background: Kaposi sarcoma is a rare, possibly angioproliferative, tumour. Kaposi sarcoma is one of the most common cancers in people living with HIV and poses a serious public health challenge in regions with high HIV burden. We aim to describe global patterns and population-wide trends in the burden of Kaposi sarcoma.

Background: With the aging among people living with HIV, it is critical to understand the health needs of older adults (aged 50 years and above) living with HIV (OALHIV). Loneliness, as the next critical public health issue, was rarely mentioned among OALHIV.

Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2021 and April 2022.

Background: The ability to accurately identify the absolute risk of neurosyphilis diagnosis for patients with syphilis would allow preventative and therapeutic interventions to be delivered to patients at high-risk, sparing patients at low-risk from unnecessary care. We aimed to develop, validate, and evaluate the clinical utility of simplified clinical diagnostic models for neurosyphilis diagnosis in HIV-negative patients with syphilis.

Methods: We searched PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and UpToDate for publications about neurosyphilis diagnostic guidelines in English or Chinese from database inception until March 15, 2023.
