Objective: Current studies have indicated that diabetes mellitus (DM) is highly prevalent in patients with cancer, but there is little research on consequences on the well-being of patients during cancer treatment. This analysis evaluates the relationship between DM and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in patients with cancer, using a large and well-characterized cohort.
Methods: This study utilized the Total Cancer Care protocol at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute.
We considered the relationship between the benefits and costs of territorial defense in a wild population of the Leon Springs pupfish, Cyprinodon bovinus. We defined benefit as the number of eggs deposited on an artificial substratum placed within the defender's territory. Costs included two defensive behaviors.

This study assessed the prevalence of PCC in non-hospitalized COVID-19 primary care patients compared to primary care patients not diagnosed with COVID-19.
Methods: This cross-sectional, population-based study (n = 2539) analyzed and compared the prevalence of PCC in patients with a positive COVID-19 test (n = 1410) and patients with a negative COVID-19 test (n = 1129) never hospitalized for COVID-19 related conditions.
Introduction: The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is home for the University of Utah's Family Medicine Residency program. Although Utah's diversity is steadily increasing, the race/ethnic diversity of the program's family medicine residency does not reflect the state's general population.
Methods: From 2017 to 2021, the residency instituted several adjustments to recruitment processes, including modification of an existing screening system to better highlight resiliency in overcoming challenging life experiences; promotion of commitment to diversity during interview days; incorporation of increased participation from diverse faculty and residents on interview days; and addition of outreach from the Office of Health, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
Background: This study aimed to understand the prevalence of prediabetes (preDM) and diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients with cancer overall and by tumor site, cancer treatment, and time point in the cancer continuum.
Methods: This cohort study was conducted at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. Patients with a first primary invasive cancer enrolled in the Total Cancer Care protocol between July 2016 and July 2018 were eligible.
Purpose: Fatigue is one of the most common and distressing symptoms experienced by cancer survivors. Understanding fatigue trajectories from pre- to post-diagnosis could inform fatigue prevention and management strategies.
Methods: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (SEER-MHOS) linked data resource to characterize fatigue trajectories and their predictors 1214 older adult survivors of breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer.
BENZODIAZEPINES REMAIN THE FIRST-LINE REGIMEN FOR ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME (AWS) AND ARE THE ONLY CLASS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PLACEBO FOR REDUCING SEIZURE (STRENGTH OF RECOMMENDATION [SOR]: B, BASED ON 3 MEDIUM-QUALITY RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS [RCTS]). ANTICONVULSANTS ARE NO MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PLACEBO AT REDUCING SEIZURES (SOR: B, BASED ON 10 MODERATE-QUALITY RCTS). GABAPENTIN REDUCES WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS AND IS LESS SEDATING THAN BENZODIAZEPINES (SOR: B, BASED ON 1 MEDIUM-QUALITY RCT).

While not an ACGME requirement, residents need leadership skills to apply QI knowledge. We developed the Skills-based Experiential Embedded Quality Improvement (SEE-QI) curriculum to integrate training in QI, leadership, and scholarship.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFungal peritonitis in the peritoneal dialysis population is difficult to diagnose promptly due to the inherently slow cultivation-based methods currently required for identification of peritonitis pathogens. Because of the moderate risk for severe complications, the need for rapid diagnostics is considerable. One possible solution to this unmet need is the T2Candida Panel, a new technology designed to detect the most common pathogenic spp.

Methods: Seventy-four KOA patients were recruited and randomized to three groups: boosted acupuncture (with a manipulation to enhance expectation), standard acupuncture, or treatment as usual (TAU).
Objectives: Pharmacist-led diabetes collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) has been shown to improve outcomes. Whether such programs are effective specifically in Medicaid patients, who face barriers to access and self-management, has not been well characterized. This pilot study explores glycemic control, utilization and costs associated with pharmacist-led CDTM in a small population of Medicaid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Adult guidelines recommend augmented dosing (40 mcg/dose), resulting in improved response in adults. We sought to determine whether children on dialysis mount a similar antibody response when given standard or augmented dosing of hepatitis B vaccine.

First, were females selective in the males with whom they spawned or were they unselective, spawning randomly among males? Second, how promiscuous were the females, i.e.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients 21 years or younger who had undergone primary gastrocystoplasty between 1984 and 2004. Patients who underwent secondary gastrocystoplasty or primary composite augmentation or had cloacal exstrophy were excluded.

There are multiple ways in which working memory can influence selective attention. Aside from the content-specific effects of working memory on selective attention, whereby attention is more likely to be directed towards information that matches the contents of working memory, the mere level of load on working memory has also been shown to have an effect on selective attention. Specifically, high load on working memory is associated with increased processing of irrelevant information.

Our study aims to evaluate the sensitivity of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) pediatric instrument to indicators of disease severity and activity in pediatric chronic kidney disease.
Methods: This cross sectional study included 233 children 8-17 years old, with chronic kidney disease from 16 participating institutions in North America.
Background And Objectives: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) represents a common disease in pediatric nephrology typified by a relapsing and remitting course and characterized by the presence of edema that can significantly affect the health-related quality of life in children and adolescents. The PROMIS pediatric measures were constructed to be publically available, efficient, precise, and valid across a variety of diseases to assess patient reports of symptoms and quality of life. This study was designed to evaluate the ability of children and adolescents with NS to complete the PROMIS assessment via computer and to initiate validity assessments of the short forms and full item banks in pediatric NS.

Study Design: We conducted a retrospective chart review of children diagnosed with AKI through the use of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision diagnosis code 584.5 or 584.
Previous investigation at our resident-teaching, family medicine clinics determined that >80% of adult patients have body mass index (BMI) recorded in the electronic medical record. The quality of this measure, however, is not known. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of documented BMI.

Therapy with fenoldopam appeared successful in one case in that renal replacement therapy was avoided with improvement in urine output and renal function. These are the first reported cases of fenoldopam use in children with acute kidney injury receiving mechanical circulatory support.
