Background: Comparisons of nicotine and toxicant exposure between people who use different alternative tobacco products remains underexplored.

Methods: This cross-sectional, multi-country study analyzed urinary metabolites of nicotine, NNK, and volatile organic compounds (acrolein, acrylamide, acrylonitrile) among established users (n=550) in Japan and Canada. Participants exclusively or concurrently used nicotine vaping products (NVPs; Canada only), heated tobacco products (HTPs; Japan only), and combustible cigarettes (CCs; Japan and Canada), or abstained (Japan and Canada).

Can switching from cigarettes to heated tobacco products reduce consequences of pulmonary infection?

Rationale: While tobacco industry data suggests that switching from combustible cigarettes to heated tobacco products (HTPs), like IQOS, may reduce the users' exposure to respiratory toxicants, it is not known if using HTPs impacts the outcomes of acute respiratory infections.

Objectives: Does switching from cigarettes to HTPs improve responses to pulmonary infection.

Methods: We conducted experiments in which 3 groups of mice were pre-exposed to cigarette smoke for 8 weeks, followed by 8-week exposure to (1) HTPs (tobacco product switching), (2) air (smoking cessation), or (3) continued exposure to cigarette smoke.

Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) purport to reduce exposure to tobacco-related toxicants compared to combustible cigarettes. This cross-sectional study examined the content of nicotine, two humectants (propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG)), and four tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs: NNN, NNK, NAT, and NAB) in the tobacco filler of a popular HTP brand (IQOS). Non-menthol and menthol IQOS sticks were purchased from nine countries between 2017 and 2020 and were classified into two versions ("Bold" and "Light") using Philip Morris's flavor descriptors.

Background And Objectives: There are no guidelines for intravenous fluid (IVF) administration after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC). This study assessed rates of post-CRS/HIPEC morbidity according to perioperative IVF administration.

Methods: All patients undergoing CRS/HIPEC March 2007 to June 2018 were reviewed, recording clinicopathologic, operative, and postoperative variables.

Introduction: In December 2022, California (CA) enforced a voter-approved regulation restricting the retail sale of flavoured tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. Shortly after, new products emerged on the market containing similar blue and green package colours yet with 'non-menthol' descriptors. Using chemical analyses, we measured the content of menthol and 15 other cooling chemicals in Californian cigarettes with 'non-menthol' descriptors and compared concentrations to similar 'menthol'-labelled counterparts available in New York State (NY).

Heavy metals in ENDS: a comparison of open versus closed systems purchased from the USA, England, Canada and Australia.

Introduction: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are known to contain heavy metals such as lead (Pb), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr). The presence of heavy metals in ENDS may be due to contamination of e-liquids or leaching from elements of the ENDS device. This study investigates differences in ENDS metal concentrations between product type, year of purchase, country of purchase and e-liquid flavour.

Removal of incorrect penicillin allergy labels in a UK hospital.

Objectives: Penicillin allergy records are common, often incorrect and are associated with broad spectrum antibiotic use. We piloted a pharmacist-led multidisciplinary penicillin allergy de-labelling daily ward round to determine the opportunity for penicillin allergy de-labelling in a UK hospital.

Methods: A daily ward round, delivered by antibiotic pharmacists or junior doctors, identified adult medical and surgical patients between 7 November 2022 and 31 January 2023 with a penicillin allergy record that was preventing first-line penicillin use.

Evaluation of genetic demultiplexing of single-cell sequencing data from model species.

Single-cell sequencing (sc-seq) provides a species agnostic tool to study cellular processes. However, these technologies are expensive and require sufficient cell quantities and biological replicates to avoid artifactual results. An option to address these problems is pooling cells from multiple individuals into one sc-seq library.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the effect of postoperative PPIs on 90-day perioperative outcomes in all patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy at our institution from April 2017 to December 2020.

The E-cigarette or Vaping Product Use-Associated Lung Injury Epidemic: Pathogenesis, Management, and Future Directions: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is a severe pulmonary illness associated with the use of e-cigarettes or vaping products that was officially identified and named in 2019. This American Thoracic Society workshop was convened in 2021 to identify and prioritize research and regulatory needs to adequately respond to the EVALI outbreak and to prevent similar instances of disease associated with e-cigarette or vaping product use. An interdisciplinary group of 26 experts in adult and pediatric clinical care, public health, regulatory oversight, and toxicology were convened for the workshop.

Introduction: Juul is a leading electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) brand in the USA. By November 2019, Juul pre-emptively limited online and in-store sales of non-tobacco or menthol-flavoured pods ahead of impending flavour bans. Since this removal, sale of mango-flavoured Juul-compatible pods was introduced to the market by smaller companies.

Introduction: On 18 May 2020, New York State enacted legislation banning the sale of vaping products with distinguishable flavours (other than tobacco). According to this new statute, vaping products are deemed flavoured if they include a statement, whether expressed or implied, that have distinguishable tastes or aromas other than tobacco. This study aimed to determine how manufacturers responded.

The dramatic increase in accessibility to sequencing technologies has opened new avenues into studying different processes, cells, and animal models. In the amphibian models used for regeneration research, these new datasets have uncovered a variety of information about what genes define the regenerating limb as well as how genes and cells change over the course of regeneration. The accumulation of data from these studies undoubtedly increases our understanding of regeneration.

Genetic structure of dinoflagellate symbionts in coral recruits differs from that of parental or local adults.

The symbiotic relationship between dinoflagellate algae in the family Symbiodiniaceae and scleractinian corals forms the base of the tropical reef ecosystem. In scleractinian corals, recruits acquire symbionts either "vertically" from the maternal colony or initially lack symbionts and acquire them "horizontally" from the environment. Regardless of the mode of acquisition, coral species and individual colonies harbor only a subset of the highly diverse complex of species/taxa within the Symbiodiniaceae.

The purpose of this study was to compare device/liquid characteristics, use behavior, and nicotine exposure between POD and MOD users.

Methods: Data from the initial visit of a prospective observational study of exclusive ENDS users compared MOD (n = 48) and POD (n = 37) users.

The evolution of advanced cognition in vertebrates is associated with two independent innovations in the forebrain: the six-layered neocortex in mammals and the dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR) in sauropsids (reptiles and birds). How these innovations arose in vertebrate ancestors remains unclear. To reconstruct forebrain evolution in tetrapods, we built a cell-type atlas of the telencephalon of the salamander .

Preoperative transversus abdominis plane block decreases intraoperative opiate consumption during minimally invasive cholecystectomy.

Background: The ongoing epidemic of prescription opiate abuse is one of the most pressing health issues in the United States today. Consequently, analgesic adjuncts, such as multimodal drug regimens and regional anesthetic blocks (like transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block), have been introduced to the perioperative period in hopes of decreasing postoperative opiate use. However, the effect of these interventions on intraoperative opiate use has not been examined.

Background: Frailty is associated with postoperative mortality, but its significance after hepatectomy for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) is poorly defined. This study evaluated the impact of frailty after hepatectomy for CRLM.

Methods: The study identified 8477 patients in National Surgical Quality Improvement Program databases from 2014 to 2019 and stratified them by frailty score using the risk analysis index as very frail (>90th percentile), frail (75th-90th percentile), or non-frail (< 75th percentile).

Gallbladder Cancer: A Single-Institution 10-Year Experience-Analysis of Adenocarcinoma Subtypes and Tumors Arising from Intracholecystic Papillary Neoplasms.

Background: Gallbladder cancer accounts for 1.2% of global cancer diagnoses. Literature on biliary-type adenocarcinoma (BTA), and specifically carcinoma arising from intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasms (ICPNs), is limited.

AGN as potential factories for eccentric black hole mergers.

There is some weak evidence that the black hole merger named GW190521 had a non-zero eccentricity. In addition, the masses of the component black holes exceeded the limit predicted by stellar evolution. The large masses can be explained by successive mergers, which may be efficient in gas disks surrounding active galactic nuclei, but it is difficult to maintain an eccentric orbit all the way to the merger, as basic physics would argue for circularization.
