High local recurrence of early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma after percutaneous thermal ablation in routine clinical practice.

Background And Aim: The risk of local tumour progression (LTP) and factors predicting LTP following percutaneous thermal ablation (PTA) of early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have not been well studied in non-trial settings and may be underestimated. We aimed to assess these outcomes in a multicentre study.

Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective review of consecutive patients with early-stage HCC treated with a curative intent across three tertiary Australian centres between 2006 and 2012 with either radiofrequency ablation or microwave ablation.

Down-staging of hepatocellular carcinoma via external-beam radiotherapy with subsequent liver transplantation: a case report.

Despite the widespread use of locoregional therapies [radiofrequency ablation and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)], there is currently a lack of high-quality evidence supporting their use for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients on the liver transplantation (LT) waiting list or requiring down-staging. Radiotherapy has rarely been used in this setting and has usually been in the form of more complex and less accessible techniques such as proton-beam and stereotactic body radiation therapy. Only 1 report describes the use of conventional 3-dimensional conformal external-beam radiotherapy (cEBRT) techniques as neoadjuvant or down-staging therapy for patients who are LT candidates.

Tophaceous gout in the cervical spine.

Gout is a common metabolic disorder typically affecting the distal joints of the appendicular skeleton. Involvement of the axial skeleton, particularly the facet joints and posterior column of the cervical spine, is rare. This case report highlights such a presentation in a 76-year old female who presented with cervical spine pain following a fall.
