The persistence of farmland plastic pollution has raised significant concerns regarding its potential long-term impacts on soil health in the context of global climate change. However, there are still gaps in the understanding of the impacts of plastic residues on soil microbial communities and functions in agricultural environments under unstable and extreme climatic conditions. In this study, the effects of plastic residues (two types and three shapes) on farmland soil bacterial communities and functions across varying environmental conditions were investigated through microscopic experiments.

The vertical settling of plastic debris in oceans is poorly understood. A large share of low-density microplastics (LDMPs) are largely absent from sea surfaces. The present study employs a model that considers the potential of an overlooked microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process and new motion equations for irregular LDMPs.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been shown to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and accumulate in human brain. The BBB transmission and accumulation efficiency of PFAS, as well as the potential health risks from human co-exposure to legacy and emerging PFAS due to differences in transport efficiency, need to be further elucidated. In the present pilot study, 23 plasma samples from glioma patients were analyzed for 17 PFAS.

Exposure to microplastics (MPs) and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) combined at high concentrations may induce adverse effects to aquatic organisms in laboratory-scale studies. To determine environmentally relevant concentrations of HOCs in MPs, it is essential to understand the occurrence of MP-affiliated HOCs in the aquatic environment. Here we report the occurrences of HOCs affiliated with polymer-specific floating MPs from 12 tributaries and three estuaries in the Pearl River Delta, South China.

Marine plastic pollution poses a potential threat to the ecosystem, but the sources and their magnitudes remain largely unclear. Existing bottom-up emission inventories vary among studies for two to three orders of magnitudes (OMs). Here, we adopt a top-down approach that uses observed dataset of sea surface plastic concentrations and an ensemble of ocean transport models to reduce the uncertainty of global plastic discharge.

Article Synopsis
  • Marine plastic debris primarily comes from land-based sources, with river transport significantly contributing to ocean pollution.
  • A new River-to-Ocean model was created to quantify the amount of plastic waste each country puts into rivers, showing that in 2016, riverine plastic outflows varied widely, with the highest contributors being India, China, and Indonesia.
  • The total annual riverine outflow from 161 countries was estimated to be between 0.15-0.53 million metric tons, which is a small percentage of the total plastic waste generated, indicating that factors like population size and waste generation impact individual countries' contributions to marine plastic pollution.

Rivers are recognized as an important pathway for transport of microplastics (MPs) from land to sea, but limited information is available on the spatial distribution and seasonal variation of riverine MPs from upper reaches to estuaries. Such information is critical for source apportionment and development of effective management measures for riverine MPs. To fill the knowledge gap, we investigated the occurrence of MPs in surface water along an urban river in Guangzhou, southern China in wet and dry seasons.

Microscopy is often the first step in microplastic analysis and is generally followed by spectroscopy to confirm material type. The value of microscopy lies in its ability to provide count, size, color, and morphological information to inform toxicity and source apportionment. To assess the accuracy and precision of microscopy, we conducted a method evaluation study.

Biobased plastic exhibits unique benefits for achieving carbon neutrality, a key step toward reducing atmospheric greenhouse gases, due to its stability, high carbon content, and origin of carbon by photosynthesis. Herein we evaluate the role and potential of biobased plastic as an alternative carbon reservoir which is completely artificial, since most plastic polymers are synthetic and massively produced after the 1950 s. Model simulation indicates that plastic, under usage, burial, and littering, forms a growing carbon reservoir, sinking 6.

Plastic pollution derived from the disposal of plastic bags in the environment is clearly evidenced. However, little attention has been directed towards plastic waste derived from plastic dog poop bags (DPBs), which are widely used and can never be recycled. Herein, we raise concerns about the contribution of DPBs to plastic pollution in the environment.

Accumulation of microplastics (MPs) data on a global scale is key to supporting plastic waste management for protecting ecosystems. To respond this call, a sampling campaign was conducted in the summer and winter seasons of 2018 to collect beach and mangrove sediment samples from 32 sites along the coastline of South China. The MPs concentrations in the intertidal zone along the coast of South China were comparable to those in other regions around the world.

Low yields of HO and a narrow range of appropriate pH values have been two major drawbacks for electro-Fenton (EF) process. Herein, metal-free electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) were developed with nitrogen and sulfur co-doped electrochemically exfoliated graphene (N, S-EEGr) electrocatalysts, which was confirmed as an outstanding bifunctional catalyst for synchronous generation and activation of HO via (2 + 1) e consecutive reduction reactions. Specifically, two elements (N, S) in metal-free N, S-EEGr-CF cathode synergize to promote the formation of HO followed by its activation.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial environments, and detrimental biological effects have been observed on a variety of organisms, from bacteria and alga to plants and animals. A fast-growing number of toxicological studies report diverse responses and wide species-dependent sensitivity upon MNP exposure. While studies are dominated by in vivo animal tests, our understanding of cellular toxicity and the corresponding toxicity mechanisms is still limited.
