Before-Visit Questionnaire: A Tool to Augment Communication and Decrease Provider Documentation Burden in Pediatric Diabetes.

Objective: To develop and evaluate an electronic tool that collects interval history and incorporates it into a provider summary note.

Methods: A parent-facing online before-visit questionnaire (BVQ) collected information from parents and caregivers of pediatric diabetes patients prior to a clinic encounter. This information was related to interval history and perceived self-management barriers.

Mobile PCR-based surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 to reduce visiting restrictions in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic: a pilot study.

Purpose: Residents in nursing homes for the elderly (NH) are at high risk for death from COVID-19. We investigated whether repeated non-mandatory RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 surveillance of NH staff and visitors reduces COVID-19 incidence rates in NH residents and allows to reduce visiting restrictions.

Methods: This pilot study at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic compared a surveillance approach of regular, twice-weekly voluntary PCR testing of health-care workers (HCW) and visitors in interventional NH (INH) with a setting without regular testing in control NH (CNH).

Evaluation of HIV-1 reservoir size and broadly neutralizing antibody susceptibility in acute antiretroviral therapy-treated individuals.

Objective: Persistence of the viral reservoir is the main barrier to curing HIV. Initiation of ART during acute HIV infection can limit the size and diversity of the reservoir. In depth characterization of the reservoir in individuals who initiate ART during acute infection will be critical for clinical trial design and cure strategies.

Harnessing the Electronic Health Record and Computerized Provider Order Entry Data for Resource Management During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Development of a Decision Tree.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in shortages of diagnostic tests, personal protective equipment, hospital beds, and other critical resources.

Objective: We sought to improve the management of scarce resources by leveraging electronic health record (EHR) functionality, computerized provider order entry, clinical decision support (CDS), and data analytics.

Methods: Due to the complex eligibility criteria for COVID-19 tests and the EHR implementation-related challenges of ordering these tests, care providers have faced obstacles in selecting the appropriate test modality.

Management of Metadata Types in Basic Cardiological Research.

Introduction: Ensuring scientific reproducibility and compliance with documentation guidelines of funding bodies and journals is a topic of greatly increasing importance in biomedical research. Failure to comply, or unawareness of documentation standards can have adverse effects on the translation of research into patient treatments, as well as economic implications. In the context of the German Research Foundation-funded collaborative research center (CRC) 1002, an IT-infrastructure sub-project was designed.

Dynamically Induced Exceptional Phases in Quenched Interacting Semimetals.

We report on the dynamical formation of exceptional degeneracies in basic correlation functions of nonintegrable one- and two-dimensional systems quenched to the vicinity of a critical point. Remarkably, fine-tuned semimetallic points in the phase diagram of the considered systems are thereby promoted to topologically robust non-Hermitian (NH) nodal phases emerging in the coherent time evolution of a dynamically equilibrating system. Using nonequilibrium Green's function methods within the conserving second Born approximation, we predict observable signatures of these NH nodal phases both in equilibrated spectral functions and in the nonequilibrium dynamics of momentum distribution functions.

Pulse Energy and Pulse Duration Effects in the Ionization and Fragmentation of Iodomethane by Ultraintense Hard X Rays.

The interaction of intense femtosecond x-ray pulses with molecules sensitively depends on the interplay between multiple photoabsorptions, Auger decay, charge rearrangement, and nuclear motion. Here, we report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of the ionization and fragmentation of iodomethane (CH_{3}I) by ultraintense (∼10^{19}  W/cm^{2}) x-ray pulses at 8.3 keV, demonstrating how these dynamics depend on the x-ray pulse energy and duration.

Hydrothermal processing of 3D-printed calcium phosphate scaffolds enhances bone formation in vivo: a comparison with biomimetic treatment.

Hydrothermal (H) processes accelerate the hydrolysis reaction of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) compared to the long-established biomimetic (B) treatments. They are of special interest for patient-specific 3D-printed bone graft substitutes, where the manufacturing time represents a critical constraint. Altering the reaction conditions has implications for the physicochemical properties of the reaction product.

Utility of intestinal intravital microscopy for the study of CNS injury-induced immunodepression syndrome (CIDS).

Background: Stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other forms of central nervous system (CNS) injury initiate a local inflammatory response. Compensatory anti-inflammatory pathways are activated to limit secondary damage due to inflammation. The associated release of immunosuppressing neuromodulators can result in system-wide immune dysregulation (CNS injury-induced immune-depression syndrome -CIDS).

Integration of a Pilot Oral Health Curriculum into a Medical School Pediatric Rotation.

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in medical student knowledge, skills, and beliefs in oral health after participating in an oral health curriculum that included an online learning module, shadowing pediatric dental residents, and applying fluoride varnish. Third-year medical students completed a precurriculum questionnaire. After completing the online module and clinical experience, students completed a postcurriculum questionnaire.

Background: Despite the recent emergency use authorization of two vaccines for the prevention of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, vaccination rates are lower than expected. Vaccination efforts may be hampered by supply, delivery, storage, patient prioritization, administration infrastructure or logistics problems. To address the last issue, our institution is sharing publically a calculator to optimize the management of staffing and facility resources in an outpatient mass vaccination effort.

Factors associated with testing for HIV and hepatitis C among behaviorally vulnerable men in Germany: a cross-sectional analysis upon enrollment into an observational cohort.

Background: HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) have shared routes of transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Routine testing facilitates early diagnosis and treatment, thereby preventing morbidity and onward transmission. We evaluated factors associated with HIV and HCV testing in a behaviorally vulnerable cohort of predominantly MSM.

Providing care in isolation while awaiting SARS-CoV-2 test results: Considering differential diagnoses and avoiding anchoring bias.

Isolation of confirmed or suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases is essential but, as symptoms of COVID-19 are non-specific and test results not immediately available, case identification at admission remains challenging. To inform optimization of triage algorithms, patient flow and patient care, we analyzed characteristics of patients admitted to an isolation ward, both severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) positive patients and patients in which initial suspicion was not confirmed after appropriate testing.Data from patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 treated in an isolation unit were analyzed retrospectively.

Hidden Patterns of Anti-HLA Class I Alloreactivity Revealed Through Machine Learning.

Detection of alloreactive anti-HLA antibodies is a frequent and mandatory test before and after organ transplantation to determine the antigenic targets of the antibodies. Nowadays, this test involves the measurement of fluorescent signals generated through antibody-antigen reactions on multi-beads flow cytometers. In this study, in a cohort of 1,066 patients from one country, anti-HLA class I responses were analyzed on a panel of 98 different antigens.

Rodent models of ketamine-induced cystitis.

Aims: Long-term or recreational use of ketamine affects the urinary system and can result in ketamine-induced cystitis (KIC). Rodent models of KIC are important to study KIC pathophysiology and are paramount to the future development of therapies for this painful condition. This review aims to provide a summary of rodent models of KIC, focusing on disease induction, experimental methods, and pathological features of the model.

Methods: We analyzed 2018 survey data from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Pediatrician Life and Career Experience Study (PLACES), a longitudinal cohort study of early and midcareer pediatricians. Cohorts graduated from residency between 2002 and 2004 or 2009 and 2011.

Brief psychological distress screening on a cancer helpline: How nurses introduce, and callers respond to, the Distress Thermometer.

Purpose: Helplines are increasingly used to provide information and support for people affected by cancer, and the distress routinely associated with diagnosis and treatment is a major focus for those providing such care. Little is known, however, about how the Distress Thermometer (DT), a widely used tool for the assessment of patient/carer distress on cancer-support telephone helplines, is introduced and used in such settings.

Method: Using the method of conversation analysis, we present a qualitative analysis of DT use in actual telephone interactions by looking closely at how particular practices shape interaction on a cancer helpline.
