Previous research has shown that subliminally presented arrows produce negative priming effect in which responses are performed slower when primes and targets are calling for the same response than different response. This phenomenon has been attributed to self-inhibitory mechanisms of response processes. Similar negative priming was recently observed when participants responded to the direction of the target arrow and the prime was a briefly displayed image of a left or right hand.
