Background: Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a contagious and economically important viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2022 in selected districts of Bale zone, Ethiopia to determine the seroprevalence and serotypes of FMD virus circulating in cattle. Blood samples were collected from cattle and tested for antibodies against non-structural proteins (NSP) of FMD virus using a 3ABC enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Several adjuvant drugs have been tried to prolong spinal anesthesia block. Currently, dexamethasone appears to be effective in extending the duration of sensory block and enhancing analgesia during surgery. It is unclear, however, whether administering dexamethasone at a dose of 8 mg offers any advantages over administering it at a dose of 4 mg.

Introduction: The use of erector spinae plane block and rectus sheath block for postoperative analgesia in midline abdominal procedures is becoming more common. However, the most effective and appropriate method remains unclear. We aimed to compare the postoperative analgesic effecacy of ultrasound-guided bilateral erector spinae plane blocks with rectus sheath blocks for midline abdominal surgery in a low- and middle-income country.

Article Synopsis
  • - Each year, 1.3 million neonates acquire HIV during pregnancy, labor, and breastfeeding, but replacing breastfeeding with safe feeding practices can nearly eliminate this risk.
  • - A study of 314 mothers with infants under 24 months found a 67.2% adoption rate of safe infant feeding practices, with only 2.89% of infants testing positive for HIV.
  • - Factors promoting safe feeding included mothers aged 25-35, completing high school, having good knowledge about infant feeding, and living in urban areas; surprisingly, being married was linked to lower chances of safe feeding practices.

Objective: Chikungunya is a disease caused by mosquito-borne chikungunya virus infection. This disease is becoming one of the emerging/re-emerging viral diseases in tropical and subtropical countries but is neglected by public health systems. This study assessed the seroprevalence of chikungunya virus infection among patients with acute febrile illness seeking healthcare in a malaria-endemic area in the Afar Region, Northeast Ethiopia.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global public health problem characterized by an elevated blood glucose level. Monitoring blood sugar levels is vital for effective diabetes management and preventing complications. However, the association between longitudinal biomarkers and the incidence of diabetic complications is often overlooked.

Background: In the pastoral/agro-pastoral communities in Ethiopia, like in South Omo, brucellosis constitutes a serious health threat for livestock and the public. The public health risk is especially high in these communities, as their way of life is highly linked with their herds.

Objective: The study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence and identify potential risk factors of cattle brucellosis in South Omo zone in southern Ethiopia.

Background: Case detection delay (CDD) in leprosy is defined as the period between the onset of the first signs and symptoms and the time of diagnosis. A tool, consisting of a questionnaire and a detailed guide for researchers, which includes photos of typical skin signs and notes on establishing the timing of events, was developed to determine this period of delay in months in recently diagnosed leprosy patients. The aims of the study were to determine the reliability and consistency of this CDD assessment tool.

Background: In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, open ditches along innner roads in residential areas serve to convey domestic wastewater and rainwater away from residences. Contamination of drinking water by wastewater through faulty distribution lines could expose households to waterborne illnesses. This prompted the study to assess the microbiological safety of wastewater and drinking water in Addis Ababa, identify the pathogens therein, and determine their antibiotic resistance patterns.

Robust attention was brought to researchers due to deterioration of wastewater quality of lakes and reservoirs as major global concerns by industrial release. The uncontrolled releases of effluents impose serious impacts for both aquatic and terrestrial environments. In the current study, many parameters like nutrient loads, heavy metals and physicochemical properties of wastewater, wetland grass, and papaya samples were analysed.

Background: Despite all of the efforts, leprosy continues to affect hundreds of thousands of people every year, including children, showing the ongoing transmission of the disease within the population. The transmission of leprosy can be interrupted through an integrated approach that includes active case-finding, contact tracing and capacity building of health workers.

Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to assess the knowledge, attitudes and skills of health workers in the screening and diagnosis of leprosy.

Purpose: Brucellosis is one of the most important reproductive diseases that cause abortion and breeding failure in small ruminants in Ethiopia. Therefore, our objective was to detect the seropositivity and risk factors of infection in small ruminants with history of abortion using modified RBPT, cELISA, and CFT in the Amibara district of the Afar Region, Ethiopia.

Methods: Sera were collected from 226 animals (195 goats and 31ewes) and assessed for seropositivity of infection using modified RBPT, CFT, and competitive ELISA.

In the present study, we use knipholone as a prototype molecule to identify new anti-infective agents. Since knipholone is insoluble in water, which would have a detrimental effect on its bioavailability and efficacy, we synthesized knipholone Mannich base derivatives (-) that have better predicted solubility and investigated their antimicrobial activity against eight pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains. The chemical structures of compounds - were elucidated from their H and C NMR data, and their antimicrobial activity evaluation was carried out by a broth microdilution MTT assay.

Introduction: Flaviviruses are a genus of enveloped single-stranded RNA viruses that include dengue virus (DENV), yellow fever virus, West Nile virus (WNV), Japanese encephalitis virus, and Zika virus. Nowadays, diverse serological assays are available to diagnose flaviviruses. However, infection with flaviviruses induces cross-reactive antibodies, which are a challenge for serological diagnosis.
