NGS-determined molecular markers and disease burden metrics from ctDNA correlate with PFS in previously untreated DLBCL.

Personalized risk stratification and treatment may help improve outcomes among patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We developed a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based method to assess a range of potential prognostic indicators, and evaluated it using pretreatment plasma samples from 310 patients with previously untreated DLBCL from the GOYA trial (NCT01287741). Variant calls and DLBCL subtyping with the plasma-based method were concordant with corresponding tissue-based methods.

An Analysis of Political Contributions from Otolaryngologists in the United States.

Objective: Doctors can influence the development of sound healthcare policy through financial contributions to political campaigns and candidates. Our objective was to characterize the political contributions of otolaryngologists in the United States, both individually and through the ENT Political Action Committee (ENTPAC) between the years 2003 and 2020.

TMEM127 suppresses tumor development by promoting RET ubiquitination, positioning, and degradation.

The TMEM127 gene encodes a transmembrane protein of poorly known function that is mutated in pheochromocytomas, neural crest-derived tumors of adrenomedullary cells. Here, we report that, at single-nucleus resolution, TMEM127-mutant tumors share precursor cells and transcription regulatory elements with pheochromocytomas carrying mutations of the tyrosine kinase receptor RET. Additionally, TMEM127-mutant pheochromocytomas, human cells, and mouse knockout models of TMEM127 accumulate RET and increase its signaling.

Cell-free (cf)DNA-based testing has undergone increasingly wide adoption, including assays for the detection of circulating tumor DNA. Due to nucleosome protection, cfDNA has a distinctive fragment size of 160 to 180 bp. However, cfDNA can be contaminated with high molecular weight genomic DNA from blood cells released in plasma during sample collection.

This article reports the results of an ethics survey of professional members of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP/APA-Div. 14) conducted in 2019, and compares its findings with those of a similar survey conducted in 2009. In 2019, but not 2009, international members and associates were included.

Nudging Emergency Department-Initiated Addiction Treatment.

Objectives: When initiated in the Emergency Department (ED), medication for addiction treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine improves outcomes, increases engagement in addiction treatment and decreases the use of inpatient addiction treatment services. Unfortunately, initiating MAT in the ED is not yet standard practice. We assessed the impact of the addition of a multipart behavioral science-based intervention to increase opioid use disorder (OUD)-related treatments prescribed in the ED.

Atypical dysphagia with end-stage oesophageal disease 30 years post Angelchik device placement in a 72-year-old man.

Here we describe an atypical presentation of progressive dysphagia in a 72-year-old man leading to frequent regurgitations over the course of 30 years. Investigations revealed a foreign body ring surrounding the proximal stomach and dilation of the oesophagus proximal to the gastro-oesophageal junction. An Angelchik device was extracted; however, the patient's rapid deterioration prior to surgery, in addition to his severely dysfunctional oesophagus, required placement of a jejunostomy feeding tube.

Decreasing External Ventricular Drain-Related Infection Rates with Duration-Independent, Clinically Indicated Criteria for Drain Revision: A Retrospective Study.

Objective: To lower external ventricular drain (EVD)-related infection rates, in April 2013, our institution enacted a major protocol change, switching from routine EVD replacement every 5 days to EVD replacement only when clinically indicated. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of this change on nosocomial EVD-related infections.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study to compare the EVD-related infection rates between 2 groups (group A, elective EVD replacement; group B, clinically indicated EVD replacement).

Species and temperature measurements of methane oxidation in a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge.

Speciation and temperature measurements of methane oxidation during a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge in a low-temperature flow reactor have been performed. Measurements of temperature and formaldehyde during a burst of pulses were made on a time-dependent basis using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy, and measurements of all other major stable species were made downstream of a continuously pulsed discharge using gas chromatography. The major species for a stoichiometric methane/oxygen/helium mixture with 75% dilution are H(2)O, CO, CO(2), H(2), CH(2)O, CH(3)OH, C(2)H(6), C(2)H(4) and C(2)H(2).

We used a combination of batch studies and spectroscopic analyses to assess the impacts of aqueous Mn(II) on the solubility and speciation of Zn(II) in anoxic suspensions of hexagonal birnessite at pH 6.5 and 7.5.

Catecholamine exocytosis during low frequency stimulation in mouse adrenal chromaffin cells is primarily asynchronous and controlled by the novel mechanism of Ca2+ syntilla suppression.

Adrenal chromaffin cells (ACCs), stimulated by the splanchnic nerve, generate action potentials (APs) at a frequency near 0.5 Hz in the resting physiological state, at times described as 'rest and digest'. How such low frequency stimulation in turn elicits sufficient catecholamine exocytosis to set basal sympathetic tone is not readily explained by the classical mechanism of stimulus-secretion coupling, where exocytosis is synchronized to AP-induced Ca(2+) influx.

Background: The objective of this work was the study of analogical reasoning from the perspective of the equivalence-equivalence phenomenon.

Method: The variables studied consisted of the age of the participants and the educational level of the parents, in relation to performance on a reasoning task. The task utilized a sample size of 64 participants and an instrument based on conditional discriminations using the matching-to-sample procedure.

We investigated the effect of pH (5.5-8.5) on the mineralogical transformation of hexagonal birnessite induced by reaction with aqueous Mn(II) (50-2200 μM), using batch sorption experiments, X-ray diffraction analyses, X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopic measurements.

Objectives: To describe temporal trends in the use of evidence-based medical therapies and management of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in Australia and New Zealand.

Design, Setting And Participants: Our analysis of the Australian and New Zealand cohort of the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) included patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment-elevation ACS (NSTEACS) enrolled continuously between January 2000 and December 2007 from 11 metropolitan and rural centres in Australia and New Zealand.

Results: 5615 patients were included in this analysis (1723 with STEMI; 3892 with NSTEACS).

Changes in antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli in the different stages of conventional domestic wastewater treatment were investigated. Over two years, more than 3500 E. coli isolates from four stages of the wastewater treatment process were tested for resistance to six different antibiotics.

Suppression of Ca2+ syntillas increases spontaneous exocytosis in mouse adrenal chromaffin cells.

A central concept in the physiology of neurosecretion is that a rise in cytosolic [Ca(2+)] in the vicinity of plasmalemmal Ca(2+) channels due to Ca(2+) influx elicits exocytosis. Here, we examine the effect on spontaneous exocytosis of a rise in focal cytosolic [Ca(2+)] in the vicinity of ryanodine receptors (RYRs) due to release from internal stores in the form of Ca(2+) syntillas. Ca(2+) syntillas are focal cytosolic transients mediated by RYRs, which we first found in hypothalamic magnocellular neuronal terminals.

Priority for liver transplantation is based on the Model for Endstage Liver Disease (MELD) score, a mathematical function which includes international normalized ratio (INR). We present an analysis to determine the lab-to-lab variation in INR at 14 clinical laboratories across the United States. We performed a survey to identify representative clinical laboratories across the United States, where INR was measured in the determination of MELD score.

Quality assurance in hemostasis: the perspective from the College of American Pathologists proficiency testing program.

External quality assurance (EQA) is an important component of the total quality assurance program of a clinical hemostasis laboratory. The College of American Pathologists (CAP) helps meet this requirement by providing a proficiency testing program that evaluates a broad range of hemostasis methods and analytes. This article reviews the published experience of the CAP proficiency testing program in hemostasis.

Phenotypic characterization of Escherichia coli through whole-cell fatty acid profiling to investigate host specificity.

The objective of the study was to investigate whole-cell fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles of 605 Escherichia coli isolates to determine their host specificity. The isolates were cultured from six possible sources of fecal pollution; 180 isolates from sewage, 85 from dairy cow, 98 from chicken, 76 from swine, 94 from deer, and 72 from waterfowl, mostly geese and ducks. The FAME profiles were presented as the relative masses of 12 FAMEs identified in the isolates and it was found that none of the six hosts carried a "signature" FAME, a FAME that is uniquely associated with a particular host category.
