Coinfection accelerates transmission to new hosts despite no effects on virulence and parasite growth.

One of the fundamental aims of ecological, epidemiological and evolutionary studies of host-parasite interactions is to unravel which factors affect parasite virulence. Theory predicts that virulence and transmission are correlated by a trade-off, as too much virulence is expected to hamper transmission owing to excessive host damage. Coinfections may affect each of these traits and/or their correlation.

Objectives: To explore the risk factors for dental caries (DC) and tooth wear (TW) and assess their importance according to age in random French adult patients with >1 partial coronal restoration.

Methods: The data stem from a prospective observational multicentre cross-sectional study and were collected through interviews and clinical examinations. The study involved 96 dentists from 76 hospital and private clinics and included 822 patients.

Background: To prevent anaphylaxis-associated illness, intramuscular epinephrine injection is recommended. Subcutaneous injection may reduce efficacy, and intraosseous injection promotes morbidity. A few studies suggested that commercially available thigh epinephrine autoinjectors (EAIs) may induce subcutaneous/intraosseous injection in some adults.

Authenticity assessment of ground black pepper by combining headspace gas-chromatography ion mobility spectrometry and machine learning.

Currently, the authentication of ground black pepper is a major concern, creating a need for a rapid, highly sensitive and specific detection tool to prevent the introduction of adulterated batches into the food chain. To this aim, head space gas-chromatography ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), combined with machine learning, is tested in this initial, proof-of-concept study. A broad variety of authentic samples originating from eight countries and three continents were collected and spiked with a range of adulterants, both endogenous sub-products and an assortment of exogenous materials.

Multinational collaboration in solving a European Braenderup outbreak linked to imported melons, 2021.

A genomic cluster of Braenderup ST22, a serovar of subsp. which causes symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, was notified by Danish authorities to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on 3 May 2021. By 6 July 2021, Braenderup outbreak cases (n = 348) had been reported from 12 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) and the United Kingdom (UK), including 68 hospitalised cases.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli-associated pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) remains an important public health risk in France. Cases are primarily sporadic, and geographic heterogeneity has been observed in crude incidence rates. We conducted a retrospective study of 1,255 sporadic pediatric STEC-HUS cases reported during 2012-2021 to describe spatiotemporal dynamics and geographic patterns of higher STEC-HUS risk.

These disorders can lead to various clinical manifestations, including anemia, hemolysis, inflammation, and impaired oxygen-carrying capacity. Oxidative stress, characterized by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the antioxidant defense mechanisms, plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of red cell diseases.

Thermal desorption direct analysis in real-time high-resolution mass spectrometry (TD-DART-HRMS) approaches have gained popularity for fast screening of a variety of samples. With rapid volatilization of the sample at increasing temperatures outside the mass spectrometer, this technique can provide a direct readout of the sample content with no sample preparation. In this study, TD-DART-HRMS's utility for establishing spice authenticity was examined.

Just over two decades ago, Bob Boutilier published a much-cited Review in this journal on the mechanisms of cell survival in hypoxia and hypothermia. Here, we celebrate this important Review by describing how our knowledge of the mechanisms behind anoxia tolerance have progressed since 2001, including new key roles of mitochondria, something Boutilier had started exploring. Evidence now suggests that, in anoxia-tolerant brains, mitochondria initiate responses aimed at suppressing electrical activity and energy use.

Rapid emergence of extensively drug-resistant Shigella sonnei in France.

Shigella sonnei, the main cause of bacillary dysentery in high-income countries, has become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. We monitored the antimicrobial susceptibility of 7121 S. sonnei isolates collected in France between 2005 and 2021.

Countrywide multi-serotype outbreak of Bovismorbificans ST142 and monophasic Typhimurium ST34 associated with dried pork sausages in France, September 2020* to January 2021.

The French National Reference Centre for and (FNRC-ESS) detected two human clusters of 33 cases (median age: 10 years; 17 females) infected by serotype Bovismorbificans, ST142, HC5_243255 (EnteroBase HierCC‑cgMLST scheme) in September-November 2020 and of 11 cases (median age: 11 years; seven males) infected by serotype 4,12:i:-, ST34, HC5_198125 in October-December 2020. Epidemiological investigations conducted by Santé publique France linked these outbreaks to the consumption of dried pork sausages from the same manufacturer.  Bovismorbificans and  4,12:i:- were isolated by the National Reference Laboratory from different food samples, but both strains were identified in a single food sample only by qPCR.

Treatments for kinesiophobia in people with chronic pain: A scoping review.

Kinesiophobia is associated with pain intensity in people suffering from chronic pain. The number of publications highlighting this relationship has increased significantly in recent years, emphasizing the importance of investigating and synthesizing research evidence on this topic. The purpose of this scoping review was to answer the following questions: (1) What types of interventions have been or are currently being studied in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the management of kinesiophobia in patients with chronic pain? (2) What chronic pain conditions are targeted by these interventions? (3) What assessment tools for kinesiophobia are used in these interventions? According to the studies reviewed, (1) physical exercise is the most commonly used approach for managing irrational fear of movement, (2) interventions for kinesiophobia have primarily focused on musculoskeletal pain conditions, particularly low back pain and neck pain, and (3) the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia is the most commonly used tool for measuring kinesiophobia.

Water and ion diffusion in partially-water saturated compacted kaolinite: Role played by vapor-phase diffusion in water mobility.

Diffusion is the main transport process of water and solutes in clay-rich porous media owing to their very low permeability, so they are widely used as barriers against contaminant spreading. However, the prediction of contaminant mobility can be very complicated when these media are partially water-saturated. We conducted diffusion experiments for water (HTO and HDO) and ions (Na and I) through partially water saturated compacted kaolinite, a weakly charged clay material, to quantify the distinct diffusive behavior of these species.
