Free-wall shortening and relaxation during ejection in the canine right ventricle.

Relations between shortening, velocity of shortening, and relaxation of inflow and outflow segments of the right ventricular (RV) free wall (FW) were examined during ejection in 12 open-chest dogs after pharmacologic blockade by recording RV pressures, RVFW dimensions (piezoelectric crystals), and pulmonary blood flow. At heart rates of 113 +/0 8 (SD) beats/min, investigated segments remained isometric or even lengthened before the end of ejection. [Blink reflex and jaw reflex in neurinoma of the acoustic and trigeminal nerves (author's transl)].

The blink reflex was studied in four patients with neurinoma of the acoustic nerve and in two patients with trigeminal neurinoma. It was abnormal in all cases except in one neurinoma of the acoustic nerve inside the canal. The jaw reflex, studied in four cases, showed unilateral impairment in two cases of trigeminal neurinoma and one case of acoustic neurinoma; it was normal in the case of acoustic neurinoma in the canal.

Ethics education for clinical pharmacy practice.

A review of the literature on pharmacy ethics found little concern for ethical issues that arise from pharmacist involvement in clinical practice. This lack of recognition and concern for ethical dilemmas that arise from new pharmacist roles has serious implications for clinical practitioners because of their close involvement in patient care and with other professionals. Also, implications for the profession are serious since a lack of internal control invites external control.

Transformation of Streptococcus pneumoniae with S. pneumoniae-lambda phage hybrid DNA: induction of deletions.

The genetic fate of a fragment of Streptococcus pneumoniae DNA cloned into a derivative of the Escherichia coli bacteriphage lambda has been studied in pneumococcal transformation. Transforming activity of this hybrid DNA is 8 times higher than standard S. pneumoniae DNA.

[Electrologic syndromes of alteration of elicited blink reflex in multiple sclerosis. Study of a group of 33 patients (author's transl)].

The study of the blink reflex, performed in a group of 33 patients with multiple sclerosis show, as Kimura (1970) and Namerow (1973) had established, the high frequency of its alterations in this disease (almost half of the cases). The alterations of blink reflex don't depend on duration of illness; if it is true that the alterations of blink reflex are more often observed in patients with clinical symptoms of involvement of brain-stem (and particularly of pons), in some cases, only the alteration of the blink reflex suggests a brain-stem's lesion and helps to establish the diagnosis. The diversity of sites of lesions induced by multiple sclerosis in the brain-stem explains the diversity of blink reflex alteration's syndromes since they correspond to the (almost) totality of the semiology of blink reflex.

[A psychometric study of a group of Parkinsonian patients].

A group of 45 parkinsoniens patients were studied by means of Wechsler's adult intelligence scale (WAIS). The mean verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ) was not significantly different from that of the theoretical mean of the general population, whereas the performance intelligence quotient (PIQ) was significantly lower. Superior verbal over performance scale ratings were found significantly more frequently in the parkinsonian group than in the general population.

Fluorimetric study of the complex between yeast phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase and tRNA-Phe. 2. Evidence for an asymmetric behaviour of the enzyme.

The variations of several spectroscopic properties of yeast tRNA-Phe and phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase upon complex formation, were used to study the stoichiometry of the complex in different experimental conditions. In all cases, for the tRNA-Phe-enzyme complex, in the absence of other ligands, the saturations of the different conformational changes monitored for both macromolecules, are achieved at a 2:1 tRNA/enzyme stoichiometry. Phenylalanine does not modify this saturation.

Donor deoxyribonucleic acid length and marker effect in pneumococcal transformation.

The efficiency of transformation of point mutations depends upon base pair mismatches during the recombination process. For low-efficiency markers, the genetic information carried on the donor deoxyribonucleic acid is preferentially lost. To understand this elimination process, we investigated the effect of the size of donor deoxyribonucleic acid on the relative efficiency of low-efficiency point mutations.

[Scattered arterioveinous fistulae of the lung associated with alcoholic cirrhosis : about one case complicated by neurological involvement (author's transl)].

We report case of 49 years old woman suffering from severe alcoholic cirrhosis and presenting arterioveinous fistulae of the lung which evidence was given by selective arteriography. Quantitative analysis of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide show no modification ; mecanism of the opening of fistulae could no be found. This observation is noteworthy in consideration of lung lasting evolution (4 years) and out come of neurological complication (must likely due to cortical phlebitis).

[Harmful interference between preoperative prophylactic cardiac pacemaker and cutting diathermy. Case report].

The authors report the case of a patient suffering the consequences of harmful preoperative between a prophylactic cardiac pacemaker system and cutting diathermy, resulting in irreversible ventricular fibrillation. After reviewing the different mechanisms responsible for this accident, they attribute the blame to a phenomenon of capture of electromagnetic currents with the pacemaker catheter playing the role of an aerial. They reconsider the indications for the use of prophylactic pacing and recall the safety precautions which must be respected at the time of simultaneous use of an external pacemaker and cutting diathermy.

Significance of pulmonary input impedance in right ventricular performance.

Right ventricular adaptation to changes in pulmonary input impedance was studied in open-chest dogs. When identical increases in pulmonary vascular resistance are imposed by two different manoeuvres (lung inflation and clamping of the left pulmonary artery), external power and pressure-time integral of the right ventricle at similar filling pressure are always greater during clamping than during inflation. Further studies demonstrate that, at equal increases in pulmonary input impedance modulus at 0 Hz, the clamping produces a greater change in the sum of the first three harmonics of impedance than the inflation (respectively +77% and -10% vs control modulus; -82% and +8% vs control phase).

Comparative studies on the 7-iodo and 7-fluoro derivatives of N-acetoxy-N-2-acetylaminofluorene: binding sites on DNA and conformational change of modified deoxytrinucleotides.

GMP and native DNA were reacted with 7-iodo and 7-fluoro derivatives of N-acetoxy-N-2-acetylaminofluorene. It was shown that the 7-halogeno derivatives react on C-8 of guanine. Furthermore the respective amount of arylamidation (covalent linkage on the C-8 of guanine) and arylation (covalent linkage on 2-NH2 groups of C3 of guanine) addition products was determined in both native and denatured DNA-[14C]AAIF.
