Thymoquinone loaded lipid nanocapsule dispersion: two methods of preparation, characterization and evaluations for oral administration.

This work explores two methods to encapsulate Thymoquinone (TQ) into lipid nanocapsules (LNCs) for oral administration. TQ was added during the phase inversion temperature method (TQ-LNCs-1) or to unload LNCs dispersion (TQ-LNCs-2). LNCs were evaluated for mean diameter, polydispersity index (PDI), ζ-potential, drug loading (DL), drop tensiometer, storage stability, stability in simulated gastrointestinal fluids (SGIF), and intestinal permeability across Caco-2 cells.

Evolving Maintenance of Certification in Canada: A Collaborative Journey.

Continuous professional development (CPD) is crucial for physicians to maintain and enhance their skills. In response to the changing context of CPD and health care, this study applied a design thinking approach to transform and modernise the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. A member-wide survey and co-design sessions with physicians, CPD leaders, and patient representatives were conducted, emphasising the importance of their insights and experiences.

Boosting enjoyment and social inclusion to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour among older adults: protocol for a feasibility study to test the JOIN4JOY approach in five European countries.

Introduction: Programmes for older people aimed at increasing physical activity (PA) and reducing sedentary behaviour (SB) traditionally focus on achieving functional and health improvements. Focusing on enjoyment and social inclusion could strengthen adherence and help reach older people with social disadvantages. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the Join4Joy approach in PA programmes and its assessment tools.

Predictors of low and very low bone mineral density in long-term childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors: Toward personalized risk prediction.

Background: Cohorts of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cALL) survivors reaching adulthood are increasing. Approximately 30% of survivors meet criteria for low bone mineral density (BMD) 10 years after diagnosis. We investigated risk factors for low BMD in long-term cALL survivors.

Development of a Patient-Reported Experience Measure Tool for Ambulatory Patients With Acute Unexpected Needs: The APEX Questionnaire.

The aim of this study was to develop a patient-reported experience measure (PREM) for comparing the experience of care received by ambulatory patients with acute unexpected needs presenting in emergency departments (EDs), walk-in clinics, and primary care practices. The Ambulatory Patient EXperience (APEX) questionnaire was developed using a 5-phase mixed-methods approach. The questionnaire was pretested by asking potential users to rate its clarity, usefulness, redundancy, content and face validities, and discrimination on a 9-point scale (1 = strongly disagree to 9 = strongly agree).

An empirical evaluation of approximate and exact regression-based causal mediation approaches for a binary outcome and a continuous or a binary mediator for case-control study designs.

Background: In the causal mediation analysis framework, several parametric regression-based approaches have been introduced in past years for decomposing the total effect of an exposure on a binary outcome into a direct effect and an indirect effect through a target mediator. In this context, a well-known strategy involves specifying a logistic model for the outcome and invoking the rare outcome assumption (ROA) to simplify estimation. Recently, exact estimators for natural direct and indirect effects have been introduced to circumvent the challenges prompted by the ROA.

The roots of polarization in the individual reward system.

Polarization raises concerns for democracy and society, which have expanded in the internet era where (mis)information has become ubiquitous, its transmission faster than ever, and the freedom and means of opinion expressions are expanding. The origin of polarization however remains unclear, with multiple social and emotional factors and individual reasoning biases likely to explain its current forms. In the present work, we adopt a principled approach and show that polarization tendencies can take root in biased reward processing of new information in favour of choice confirmatory evidence.

The association between grip strength and carotid intima media thickness: A Mendelian randomization analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Background: Several two-sample Mendelian randomization studies have reported discordant results concerning the association between grip strength and cardiovascular disease, possibly due to the number of instrumental variables used, pleiotropic bias, and/ or effect modification by age and sex.

Methods: We conducted a sex- and age-stratified one-sample Mendelian randomization study in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. We investigated whether grip strength is associated with carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), a marker of vascular atherosclerosis event risk, using eighteen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) identified as specifically associated with grip strength.

Contact angle of ethanol, water, and their mixtures on stainless steel surfaces in dense carbon dioxide.

Hypothesis: Contact angle can be a key parameter in chemical engineering. However, the development and the optimization of numerous processes using supercritical CO, considered as environmentally friendly, require new measurements under dense CO atmosphere. Besides, the influence of the roughness or the wetting regime on the contact angle is known at ambient conditions but remains to be discussed for systems under high pressure.

A multi-sensor approach to monitor the ongoing restoration of edaphic conditions for salt marsh species facing sea level rise: An adaptive management case study in Camargue, France.

The Camargue or Rhône delta is a coastal wetland in southern France of which parts formerly devoted to salt production are undergoing a renaturation process. This study assessed a multisensor approach to investigate the link between sediment size distribution, habitat development mapped with Worldview 2, flooding durations estimated with time series of SENTINEL 2 images and elevation modelled with a LIDAR point cloud in former saltworks. A Random Forest classification algorithm was used to map the vegetation distributions of Sarcocornia fruticosa and Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, main representatives of the NATURA 2000 "Mediterranean and thermo-Atlantic halophilous scrubs (Sarcocornetea fruticosi)" habitat on the site.

Socioeconomic disparities and concentration of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province of Quebec, Canada.

Background: Recent studies suggest that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection may be greater in more densely populated areas and in cities with a higher proportion of persons who are poor, immigrant, or essential workers. This study examines spatial inequalities in SARS-CoV-2 exposure in a health region of the province of Quebec in Canada.

Methods: The study was conducted on the 1206 Canadian census dissemination areas in the Capitale-Nationale region of the province of Quebec.

Physiological, Anatomical and Metabolic Correlates of Aerobic Fitness in Human Primary Motor Cortex: A Multimodal Study.

Physical activity (PA) has been shown to benefit various cognitive functions and promote neuroplasticity. Whereas the effects of PA on brain anatomy and function have been well documented in older individuals, data are scarce in young adults. Whether high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) achieved through regular PA are associated with significant structural and functional changes in this age group remains largely unknown.

Integration of intermittent calcium signals in T cells revealed by temporally patterned optogenetics.

T cells become activated following one or multiple contacts with antigen-presenting cells. Calcium influx is a key signaling event elicited during these cellular interactions; however, it is unclear whether T cells recall and integrate calcium signals elicited during temporally separated contacts. To study the integration of calcium signals, we designed a programmable, multiplex illumination strategy for temporally patterned optogenetics (TEMPO).

An exact regression-based approach for the estimation of natural direct and indirect effects with a binary outcome and a continuous mediator.

In the causal mediation framework, a number of parametric regression-based approaches have been introduced in recent years for estimating natural direct and indirect effects for a binary outcome in an exact manner, without invoking simplifying assumptions based on the rareness or commonness of the outcome. However, most of these works have focused on a binary mediator. In this article, we aim at a continuous mediator and introduce an exact approach for the estimation of natural effects on the odds ratio, risk ratio, and risk difference scales.

A systematic review of tools for predicting complications in patients with acute infectious diarrhea.

Objective: To identify tools that predict the risk of complications in patients presenting to outpatient clinics or emergency departments (ED) with acute infectious diarrhea.

Methods: Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CINAHL were searched from inception to July 2021. Articles reporting on the derivation or validation of a score to stratify the risk of intravenous rehydration or hospitalization among patients with acute infectious diarrhea in the ED or outpatient clinic were retained for analysis.

The Dietary Inflammatory Index Is Associated with Subclinical Mastitis in Lactating European Women.

Subclinical mastitis (SCM) is an inflammatory state of the lactating mammary gland, which is asymptomatic and may have negative consequences for child growth. The objectives of this study were to: (1) test the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and SCM and (2) assess the differences in nutrient intakes between women without SCM and those with SCM. One hundred and seventy-seven women with available data on human milk (HM) sodium potassium ratio (Na:K) and dietary intake data were included for analysis.

Patterns and trends among physicians-in-training named in civil legal cases: a retrospective analysis of Canadian Medical Protective Association data from 1993 to 2017.

Background: Medico-legal data show opportunities to improve safe medical care; little is published on the experience of physicians-in-training with medical malpractice. The purpose of this study was to examine closed civil legal cases involving physicians-in-training over time and provide novel insights on case and physicians characteristics.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of closed civil legal cases at the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), a mutual medico-legal defence organization for more than 105 000 physicians, representing an estimated 95% of physicians in Canada.

Radiation efficiency of a distribution of baffled pistons with arbitrary phases.

The radiation resistance and efficiency of a collection of circular pistons, randomly placed on a plane and vibrating with arbitrary phases, are expressed as a combination of the self- and mutual-radiation components. We use the first product or bridge theorem to construct the directivity pattern of this type of arrangement and the radiation properties are calculated according to Bouwkamp's impedance theorem. To illustrate the versatility of our approach, we refer to special cases for symmetric arrangements, for example, to compare with the modal radiation efficiency in structures having "regular" modal patterns.

Long-term persistence and recycling of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis spores in wetlands sprayed for mosquito control.

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) is the main larvicide used to control mosquitoes worldwide. Although there is accumulating evidence of Bti having environmental effects on non-target fauna, relatively few field studies have documented the fate of Bti spores in the environment.
