A Conceptual Framework to Improve Resilience Among Undergraduate First-Year Nursing Students: A Mixed-Methods Study.

It is generally presumed that most undergraduate first-year nursing students are not prepared for the transition from basic to higher education. Resilience is recommended as a viable coping strategy that acts as a buffer to the adversities that undergraduate first-year nursing students experience. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop and validate a conceptual framework to improve resilience among undergraduate first-year nursing students at a South African university.

Experiences of Nurse Educators Regarding the R171 Nursing Curriculum in North-West Province, South Africa.

Background: Nurse educators must seek innovative frameworks for their curricula to prepare nursing students to meet evolving healthcare needs. The South African National Department of Health introduced the new nursing curriculum (R171) in 2013 with the aim of producing generalist nurses who can meet the health care needs of the patients and to align the nursing program with the relevant Higher Education Qualification Framework. R171 was implemented in the North-West Province in 2021.

Mental Health Review Board Members' understanding of the policy guideline on 72-hour assessment.

Background:  The Mental Health Care Act (No 17 of 2002) promotes the involvement of Mental Health Review Board (MHRB) members in the oversight, execution and evaluation of assessments and admissions of individuals in accordance with the 72-h policy guidelines. However, the MHRB experiences dissatisfaction with the implementation of policy guidelines on 72-h assessment of involuntary Mental Health Care Users (MHCUs).

Objectives:  This study explores and describes the MHRB members' understanding of the policy guidelines on 72-h assessment of involuntary MHCUs in South Africa.

Nurses' perceptions regarding the establishment of clinical education and training units in public hospitals in the North-West Province: a qualitative study.

Background: A Clinical Education and Training Unit is defined as a unit in which the clinical orientation, teaching, learning, and assessment, mentoring and support of student nurses are coordinated to achieve the outcomes of their learning programmes in the health establishment. In South Africa, Clinical Education and Training Unit was developed to reconstruct and revitalise nursing education and training. The clinical education is crucial to enable nursing students to put what they learn in the classroom into practice as they direct patient care, practise therapeutic communication, hone technical skills, demonstrate caring behaviours, investigate ethical dilemmas, and take on the roles of nurses.

Perspectives of practitioners on support for caregivers of children with intellectual disability.

Background:  Children with profound intellectual disabilities are unable to do anything for themselves and require full-time care in healthcare facilities. While caring for children, secondary caregivers become overwhelmed. Coupled with little or no support, the overwhelming work affects their psychological, social and financial well-being.

Factors That Influence Resilience among First-Year Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.

During their transition from basic to higher education, first-year undergraduate nursing students need to balance theoretical and clinical requirements, as well as their social life. A significant number of them struggle with this, due to a lack of coping mechanisms due to poor resilience. This study aimed to determine factors that influence resilience among first-year undergraduate nursing students at a South African university.

Coping strategies used by undergraduate first-year nursing students during transition from basic to higher education: a qualitative study.

Background: The undergraduate first year of a nursing program is regarded as a difficult and challenging part of the nursing course, due to the variation experienced in the transition from basic to higher education compared to other first-year courses. This causes stress, which could contribute to students' lack of coping with the transition to the university. These challenges call for coping strategies to ensure resilience among this cohort of undergraduate nursing students.

Registered nurses' experiences regarding operational factors influencing the implementation of HIV care services in the mobile health clinics of eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.

Background: Registered nurses working in the mobile health clinics (MHCs) play an important role in enabling HIV care access to populations in remote areas through Nurse Initiated Antiretroviral Therapy program (NIMART).

Aim: To explore and describe the nurses' experiences regarding operational factors influencing the implementation of HIV care services in the mobile health clinics (MHCs) of eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu Natal.

Methods: Qualitative Exploratory Descriptive (QED) method was used after permission was granted from North-West University Human Research Ethics Committee provincial and local health authorities.

HIV Care Profiling and Delivery Status in the Mobile Health Clinics of eThekwini District in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa: A Descriptive Evaluation Study.

Mobile health clinics (MHCs) serve as an alternative HIV care delivery method for the HIV-burdened eThekwini district. This study aimed to describe and profile the HIV care services provided by the MHCs through process evaluation. A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative evaluation study was performed on 137 MHCs using total population sampling.

The contribution of interprofessional education in developing competent undergraduate nursing students: integrative literature review.

Background: Effective interprofessional team collaboration is one of the necessary domains for successful interprofessional collaborative practices in healthcare (IPCP), which is crucial for the delivery of safe and quality healthcare services. Therefore, understanding the contribution of interprofessional education in nursing students is vital to improving collaboration practices in nursing students, in preparation for the dynamics that await after registration in practice amongst the interprofessional team. Thus, the aim of the study was to summarise the contribution of interprofessional education in nursing education in developing competent undergraduate nursing students.

Conceptual Framework for the Psychosocial Support of Nurses Caring for Patients Diagnosed with COVID-19 Infection in North West Province, South Africa.

Introduction: A conceptual framework provides the detailed components or concepts identifying the interrelationships in and across a project's components. Due to a lack of psychosocial support, nurses caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 are physically, psychologically and socially affected. However, there are no conceptual frameworks for the psychosocial support of nurses caring for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection in North West Province, South Africa.

A Conceptual Model to Strengthen Integrated Management of HIV and NCDs among NIMART-Trained Nurses in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Integrated management of human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in primary health care facilities remains a challenge. Despite research that has been conducted in South Africa, it is evident that in Limpopo Province there are slits in the implementation thereof. There is a need to develop a conceptual model to guide in strengthening the clinical competence of nurse-initiated management of antiretroviral therapy (NIMART)-trained nurses to implement the integrated management of HIV and NCDs to improve clinical outcomes of patients with the dual burden of diseases in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Exploring the psychosocial challenges faced by pregnant teenagers in Ditsobotla subdistrict.

Background: Pregnant teenagers usually experience psychosocial challenges such as a great amount of stress when they have to deal with an unwanted pregnancy, unpreparedness for parenthood and a lack of income as well as labour and birth complications. These are further complicated by the stigma from their families, friends and community. Unaddressed psychosocial challenges during teenage pregnancy can adversely affect the health outcomes of both mother and the child.

Recommendations for online learning challenges in nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background:  Nursing education institutions have had to change from face-to-face to online learning because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The online learning mode, however, had several challenges.

Objectives:  To explore and describe recommendations made to address the online learning challenges in nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conceptual framework for support of caregivers of children diagnosed with intellectual disabilities in Gauteng.

Unlabelled: children. Their needs are not met. There is lack of support for caregivers and no existing conceptual framework of support.

Barriers in Implementing the PMTCT in Moretele Sub-District, South Africa: An Exploratory Study.

The Prevention-of-Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program was introduced to prevent vertical transmission of HIV from a mother to her infant through pregnancy, labor, and breastfeeding. Therefore, it is critical for the program to be accessible in primary health care facilities across the globe to increase treatment uptake and to eliminate child and maternal mortality rates caused by HIV infections. However, barriers are still being experienced by some nurses while implementing PMTCT around Moretele sub-district in the North West Province (NWP).

Experiences of adolescents and parents on the mental health management of depression in adolescents, North West province, South Africa.

Background:  Living with or managing an adolescent suffering from depression predisposes the adolescent and parents to various experiences, considering the multifactorial nature of depression and associated symptoms.

Objective:  This study explored and described the experiences of adolescents and their parents on the mental health management of depression in the North West province (NWP), South Africa.

Method:  A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, contextual research design was adopted.

Professional nurses' perceptions regarding clinical competence of community service nurses in North West province, South Africa.

Background: South African Nursing Council requires nurses who successfully complete their training to perform a year of community service before obtaining registration as professional nurses (Regulation 425). Community service for health professionals was introduced as a strategy to retain newly qualified professionals within the country. The premise is that community service for newly graduated nurses gives them the opportunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge critical in their professional development.

Coping strategies used by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: A narrative literature review.

Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is understandable that nurses are working under stressful conditions. A successful use of effective coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic will help nurses to manage stressful conditions.

Aim: The objective of this narrative literature review was to explore and describe the coping strategies used by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coping mechanisms used by the families of mental health care users in Mahikeng sub-district, North West province.

Background: Families of the mental health care users (MHCUs) face different challenges in dealing with, supporting and caring for MHCUs on a daily basis. The divergent coping mechanisms that the family members use aim to lower the negative, psychological and emotional impact of the stress. These include: escape, avoidance and denial.

Perceptions of mental health nurses about psychosocial management of depression in adolescents, North West province, South Africa.

Background: Depression in adolescents is a multifactorial global public health concern, with devastating consequences on the sufferer. The prevalence of depression amongst this age group is on the rise, and thus there is the need for greater attention.

Aim: To explore and describe the perceptions of mental health nurses regarding the psychosocial management of depression in adolescents in North West province, South Africa.

Dissemination and implementation of a policy on school health in public schools: A systematic review.

Background: The need to achieve school health and promote well-being that would transcend children's school life has been highlighted in several studies. Promotion of health and well-being of children has not been achieved despite the prescripts of the World Health Organization and national mandates.

Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to explore and describe the current evidence on the dissemination and implementation of a policy on school health in public schools.

Peer-mentees' challenges in an undergraduate peer-group clinical mentoring programme in a nursing education institution.

Background: Clinical competency and professional growth amongst nursing students is the cornerstone of a nursing education programme. The demanding and complex training of nursing students requires various clinical teaching and learning strategies such as peer-group clinical mentoring.

Aim: The objective of this research was to explore and describe the challenges that peer-mentees experience in an undergraduate peer-group clinical mentoring programme in one-specific nursing education institution in the North West Province.
