Article Synopsis
  • The vagus nerve is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system, impacting many internal organs vital for health and measurable through heart-rate variability (HRV).
  • Specific HRV metrics can indicate a lower risk of death, better recovery from heart issues, and improved cancer survival rates.
  • HRV-biofeedback (HRV-B), a method involving slow-paced breathing and HRV visual feedback, shows promising results in treating conditions like coronary heart disease and hypertension, although evidence for its efficacy in diabetes and dementia remains limited.

Adjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel/cyclophosphamide (TC) is adopted worldwide as a valuable option for elderly patients with high-risk early breast cancer. Some studies suggest that paclitaxel may have a better therapeutic ratio than docetaxel. Therefore we have implemented an adjuvant chemotherapy in which docetaxel was replaced by paclitaxel.

Aim: To evaluate the pCR rate and toxicity of the addition of weekly carboplatin (Cp) to paclitaxel (wP) and dose-dense (dd) epirubicin/cyclophosphamide (EC) in an open-label phase II study in TNBC patients.

Methods: Patients were included if they had stage II and III TNBC and received wP (80 mg/m/week) concurrent with weekly Cp (AUC = 2) for 12 weeks, followed by bi-weekly epirubicin (90 mg/m) and cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m) plus granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) for four cycles, followed by surgery. The primary endpoint was the rate of pCR [(ypT0/isypN0)].

We report a case of a mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma developed in a colorectal adenocarcinoma with lymph node and liver metastases exclusively emanating from the neuroendocrine carcinoma component. The patient underwent right hemicolectomy and postoperatively received chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide and subsequent high-dose induction chemotherapy, followed by autologous stem cell transplantation. Following this treatment, there was a complete remission.
