The redox structure of the water column in anoxic basins through geological time remains poorly resolved despite its importance to biological evolution/extinction and biogeochemical cycling. Here, we provide a temporal record of bottom and pore water redox conditions by analyzing the temporal distribution and chemistry of sedimentary pyrite. We combine machine-reading techniques, applied over a large library of published literature, with statistical analysis of element concentrations in databases of sedimentary pyrite and bulk sedimentary rocks to generate a scaled analysis spanning the majority of Earth's history.

Simultaneous binary population biofilm formation by a bacterium and filamentous fungus was demonstrated by time-lapse image analysis in a flow cell system. The accumulation of attached bacterial cells followed an S-shaped graph similar to batch culture bacterial growth, with continual attachment, detachment, rotation, and movement of bacteria over the surface. An extensive hyphal network formed on the surface of the flow cell, protruding into the bulk flow, which subsequently detached.

Growth rates of the species were determined in single and mixed batch culture growth. The rates were found to be significantly higher in mixed culture for Pseudomonas alcaligenes and Flavobacterium indologenes and higher in single culture for Xanthomonas maltophilia, Rhodotorula glutinis and Fusarium solani, whereas no significant difference was recorded for Alcaligenes denitrificans and Fusarium oxysporum.

Patients with oral and facial injuries presenting as emergencies to the accident and emergency (A&E) unit at Arrowe Park Hospital have been used to compare the treatment method of direct referral to oral and maxillofacial surgery with that of the routine A&E procedure. A quicker and more effective treatment was administered by direct referral of patients to oral and maxillofacial surgery and an argument for such specialist staff to be based in A&E departments is advanced.
