Objectives: Mortality from pneumonia is three times higher in Asia compared with industrialized countries. We aimed to determine the epidemiology, microbiology, and outcome of severe pneumonia in PICUs across the Pediatric Acute and Critical Care Medicine Asian Network (PACCMAN).
Design: Prospective multicenter observational study from June 2020 to September 2022.
Objective: We utilized the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to evaluate trends and assess outcomes in radiation therapy (RT) boost modality and total dose among medically inoperable endometrial cancer (EC) patients with locoregional disease.
Methods: Patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage I - IIIC2 inoperable EC treated with RT ± chemotherapy were analyzed. Practice patterns compared external beam RT (EBRT) versus high-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) boost and total RT dose (palliative: ≤3000 cGy, definitive low dose [DLD]: 4500 - 6249 cGy, definitive high dose [DHD]: ≥6250 cGy) over time.
Background/objectives: Germline genetic testing is recommended for younger patients with idiopathic pancreatitis but there has been a lack of consensus in recommendations for those over age 35. We aimed to analyze the results of genetic testing among subjects of varying ages.
Methods: Individuals who underwent germline multigene testing for pancreatitis susceptibility genes (CASR, CFTR, CPA1, CTRC, PRSS1, SPINK1) through a large commercial laboratory between 2017 and 2022 were included.
Background/aims: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) eradication using antiviral agents augments the metabolic profile. Changes in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in chronic hepatitis C patients who receive glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) remain elusive.
Methods: Data from 2417 patients treated with GLE/PIB from the Taiwan HCV Registry were analyzed, and pretreatment HbA1c levels were compared with 3-months after the-end-of treatment levels.
Iron and myelin are primary susceptibility sources in the human brain. These substances are essential for a healthy brain, and their abnormalities are often related to various neurological disorders. Recently, an advanced susceptibility mapping technique, which is referred to as χ-separation (pronounced as "chi"-separation), has been proposed, successfully disentangling paramagnetic iron from diamagnetic myelin.

Historically, studies on procedural ergonomics have focused on dermatologic surgery, however, laser procedures can also have a significant cumulative effect on physician posture. Here, we aim to highlight ergonomic challenges specific to dermatologic laser procedures and suggest areas of improvement in operating room organization, patient positioning, physician mechanics, and instrumentation.

Following immune response or infection within the body, activation of T cell-dependent and T cell-independent antigens triggers the activation of activation-induced cytidine deaminase, initiating the CSR process. CSR has the capacity to modify the functional properties of antibodies, thereby contributing to the adaptive immune response in the organism.

Sciatic nerve stimulation (SNS) neuromodulation was reported to alleviate NP and reduce neuroinflammation. However, the mechanisms underlying SNS in the DRG remain unclear.

All BoNTs are naturally co-expressed with a protective partner protein (NTNH) with which they form a 300 kDa complex, to resist acidic and proteolytic attack from the digestive tract. We have previously identified a new botulinum neurotoxin serotype, BoNT/X, that has unique and therapeutically attractive properties.

Nevertheless, the slow diffusion of multivalent ions is the primary issue with electrode materials for multivalent-ion batteries. In this review, the suitability of MXene-based materials for multivalent-ion batteries applications is explored, focusing onions such as magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), and beyond.

However, existing methods of viral isolation are time-consuming and labor-intensive due to the multiple processing steps required, resulting in low yields. Here, we introduce the rapid, efficient, and high-resolution acoustofluidic isolation of viruses from complex biological samples via Bessel beam excitation separation technology (BEST).

However, the effects of glaucine in the regulation of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remain unclear. Herein, we aimed to investigate the anti-angiogenetic and anti-inflammatory effects of glaucine in ARPE-19 cells.

However, there is limited understanding of the practical applications of mindfulness in clinical settings, particularly for end-of-life patients. This study explored palliative care professionals' experiences in delivering mindfulness-based therapy to end-of-life patients, thereby aiming to inform the development of effective interventions.

This study investigates the efficacy of PS against heavy metal toxicity in white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). After feeding PS diet (5 g/kg) or basal diet (control group) for 7 days, shrimps were exposed to sublethal concentrations of heavy metals in seawater (As: 12 mg/L, Pb: 250 mg/L, Hg: 0.

To counteract this, we co-cultured pig HOs with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (A-MSCs) and performed transcriptome analysis. The results revealed that A-MSCs enhanced the collagen synthesis pathways, which are crucial for maintaining the three-dimensional structure and extracellular matrix synthesis of the organoids.

Cytokine storm syndromes (CSSs) are caused by a dysregulated host immune response to an inciting systemic inflammatory trigger. This maladaptive and harmful immune response culminates in collateral damage to host tissues resulting in life-threatening multisystem organ failure. Knowledge of the various immune cells that contribute to CSS pathogenesis has improved dramatically in the past decade.

This study aims to assess the impact of HCV eradication on HCC recurrence patterns and long-term hepatic outcomes after RFA and to identify predictors of recurrence in patients achieving sustained virological response (SVR).
Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 274 patients receiving RFA for HCV-related HCC, including 73 and 88 patients treated with interferon-based (IFN) and direct-acting antivirals (DAA) therapy, respectively.
Research on the lived experiences of HIV survivors, including young people living with HIV, has primarily emphasized broader sociocultural concerns, such as stigmatization and cultural attitudes toward sexuality and gender, while giving less attention to the interconnectedness of these issues with the mental well-being of those affected by the illness. This study, drawing on relational ethnography including observations and interviews at four antiretroviral-administering healthcare facilities in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria, explores how young people living with HIV strive toward viral suppression and how they develop collaborative psychosocial support along with the global efforts in eradicating the HIV epidemic. We found that, in and between themselves, young people living with HIV weave for themselves a network of relationships, though discreetly, to foster and encourage survivorship.

However, the precise and accurate mechanistic modeling of PHA biosynthesis, especially medium-chain-length PHA (mcl-PHA), for yield improvement remains a challenge to biology. PHA biosynthesis is typically triggered by nitrogen limitation and tends to peak at an optimal carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio.
