Objective: To determine prevalence of hyponatremia in acute medical admissions in Northern Australasia.

Methods: We studied 469 consecutive acute medical admissions to a hospital in Australia's Far North Queensland during the colder months of June and July 2012. Prevalence of hyponatremia and its relationship with gender, age, diagnosis and prognosis in acute medical admissions were investigated.

This project aimed to measure general practitioner (GP), practice nurse and patient health literacy about memory problems, dementia and its risk factors. Data were collected from general practices across Australia and a smaller sample in England. Questionnaires explored sources and adequacy of dementia knowledge and a randomised controlled trial tested the intervention of a dementia risk reduction pamphlet on patient knowledge of dementia risk reduction strategies.

Hydroxyoctadecadienoic acids (HODEs) are stable oxidation products of linoleic acid, the generation of which is increased where oxidative stress is increased, such as in diabetes. In early atherosclerosis, 13-HODE is generated in macrophages by 15-lipoxygenase-1. This enhances protective mechanisms through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-g activation leading to increased clearance of lipid and lipid-laden cells from the arterial wall.

There are extensive data confirming involvement of the renin-angiotensin system in microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes. Blockade of the system with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) is regarded as the first-line approach to managing hypertension and end-organ protection in patients with diabetes. A newly established method for optimizing logistic models via a minorization-majorization procedure is applied to the problem of diagnosing acute coronary syndromes (ACS). The method provides a principled approach to the selection of covariates which would otherwise require the use of a suboptimal method owing to the size of the covariate set. A strategy for building models is proposed and two models optimized for performance and for simplicity are derived via 10-fold cross-validation.

Study Objective: Clinical and ECG data from presentation are highly discriminatory for diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes, whereas definitive diagnosis from serial ECG and cardiac marker protein measurements is usually not available for several hours. Artificial neural networks are computer programs adept at pattern recognition tasks and have been used to analyze data from chest pain patients with a view to developing diagnostic algorithms that might improve triage practices in the emergency department. The aim of this study is to develop and optimize artificial neural network models for diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome, to test these models on data collected prospectively from different centers, and to establish whether the performance of these models was superior to that of models derived using a standard statistical technique, logistic regression.

Changes in retinal vessel diameter are an important sign of diseases such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. Obtaining precise measurements of vascular widths is a critical and demanding process in automated retinal image analysis as the typical vessel is only a few pixels wide. In the presence of atrial fibrillation, impulses of supraventricular origin that are transmitted through the ventricles during periods of relative refractoriness to impulse conduction exhibit anomalous configurations. These "aberrant beats" can be difficult to distinguish from ventricular ectopic beats, and groups of aberrant beats may be mistaken for ventricular tachycardia. Richard Ashman, PhD, a physiologist at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, noted that ventricular refractoriness varied with the lengths of cardiac cycles; that aberrant beats typically ended short cycles following long cycles; and that aberrant beats often have a right bundle branch block configuration.

Reliable and efficient optic disk localization and segmentation are important tasks in automated retinal screening. General-purpose edge detection algorithms often fail to segment the optic disk due to fuzzy boundaries, inconsistent image contrast or missing edge features. This paper presents an algorithm for the localization and segmentation of the optic nerve head boundary in low-resolution images (about 20 microns/pixel).
