Purposive sampling was used to recruit 22 participants into three different focus groups, each with a unique demographic makeup. The results provide evidence that people's birth experiences and their experiences with fear surrounding childbirth are affected by many other social mechanisms, including relationships with providers, birth setting, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
