Article Synopsis
  • Acupotomy is a more invasive procedure than acupuncture and requires safety research, leading to the creation of the ACUPOCHECK, a checklist for monitoring adverse events (AEs).
  • A systematic review and pilot study were conducted to identify previously reported AEs, followed by a Delphi process involving 13 Korean doctors to reach a consensus on what AEs to include and how to assess them.
  • The final ACUPOCHECK identifies 12 local and 14 systemic AEs, establishing specific criteria for conditions like pain and hemorrhage, while also allowing for additional comments on any unlisted AEs.

Acupuncture treatment can be defined as a medical procedure with an acupuncture needle at acupoints. Establishing suitable control settings is essential, based on the target elements of the acupuncture therapy. In order to properly design a clinical trial or an experiment, a control group must be established.

Background: When patients continue to experience cough despite conventional treatment, East Asian traditional medicine (EATM) including herbal medicine and/or acupuncture has been frequently used. Previous systematic reviews of EATM treatment for chronic cough have been conducted mainly on herbal medicine, targeting patients with conditions that cause cough. In clinical practice, EATM interventions are not limited to herbal medicine, and considering that chronic cough is often caused by two or more conditions or unspecific causes, a comprehensive investigation is clinically relevant.

Chronic cough is a frequent condition worldwide that significantly impairs quality of life. Herbal medicine (HM) has been used to treat chronic cough due to the limited effectiveness of conventional medications. This study aimed to summarize and determine the effects of HM on patients with chronic cough.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates Gyejibokryeong-hwan (GBH), a herbal treatment for climacteric syndrome, focusing on its effectiveness based on traditional Chinese medicine's blood-stasis theory.
  • - In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 50 participants, GBH significantly improved menopause symptoms and quality of life compared to a placebo over 4 weeks.
  • - Results indicate that GBH is a likely effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, particularly urogenital issues, with no significant side effects reported.

Lumbosacral radiculopathy (LR) is a musculoskeletal disorder or pain syndrome that is generally linked to the compression or irritation of the nerve root. There is a growing interest in the development of efficient acupuncture-based treatments for LR comparable to western medicine. Structured traditional Korean medical treatments including intensified acupuncture stimulus on the EX-B2 point using the G-shaped posture modified from the sitting posture were applied to four LR patients, and the outcomes were evaluated based on objective clinical endpoints including a numeric rating scale (NRS), the Oswestry disability index (ODI), the manual muscle test (MMT), neurological symptoms, and plantar photography.

Background: To evaluate safety of acupuncture treatment by Korean Medicine Doctors (KMDs), a prospective, practice-based survey on adverse events (AEs) associated with acupuncture was conducted.

Methods: From July 2016 to October 2017, KMDs were invited to participate in an online survey. Frequency was calculated as the number of AEs per 10,000 treatments; severity was assessed with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events Grading (Severity) Scale; and causality was evaluated using the World Health Organisation-Uppsala Monitoring Centre system for standardised case causality assessment.

Lifestyle and physical characteristics affect body weight, and understanding these factors improves the precision of weight loss treatment. Many obese patients in Korea are receiving Korean medicine (KM) treatment, including herbal medicine and acupuncture, for weight loss. However, the real-world data (RWD) are insufficient in terms of being longitudinal and diverse.

Objective: Acupotomy is a modern acupuncture method that includes modern surgical methods. Since acupotomy is relatively more invasive than filiform acupuncture treatment, it is important to establish the safety profile of this practice. To justify further large-scale prospective observational studies, this preliminary study was performed to assess the feasibility of the approach and investigate the safety profile and factors potentially associated with adverse events (AEs).

In South Korea, car insurance that includes medical coverage of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has increased exponentially. Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for traffic injuries were established in 2016. We aimed to revise and update de novo CPG and distribute the adapted CPG to TKM practitioners and patients.

Background: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a significant problem for cancer patients, as the number of cancer survivors experiencing cognitive impairments is increasing in the absence of standard treatment. There have been attempts to improve the cognitive function of patients with cancer using acupuncture; however, no studies have been conducted using electroacupuncture. Thus, we designed a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of a clinical trial using electroacupuncture in CRCI patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores new methods to objectively evaluate insomnia by examining tongue features and oral microbial profiles as potential diagnostic biomarkers.
  • - Researchers compared 100 insomniac patients with 20 healthy controls, finding that the insomnia group had notable differences in tongue characteristics and an abnormal LF/HF ratio.
  • - The findings suggest that tongue lightness, coating, and specific microbial populations may serve as indicators of insomnia, with variations in oral microbial diversity further linked to sleep quality.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the feasibility of conducting a larger trial to determine the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), focusing on those with irregular menstrual cycles (oligomenorrhea).
  • - It will involve 60 women aged 20-40, divided into two groups: one receiving acupuncture alongside usual care and the other only receiving usual care over a 16-week period.
  • - The outcomes will assess changes in menstrual frequency and various hormone levels, along with physical health indicators and quality of life, with the aim of establishing direction for future clinical practices regarding PCOS treatment.

Gastroesophageal reflux-induced chronic cough (GERC) is one of the most common etiologies of chronic cough. Despite the growing prevalence and interest in GERC, no effective treatment is currently available. In our study, we used a combination of herbal medicines, (OJS) plus (SMS), for the treatment of GERC.

Studies have reported that mild adverse events (AEs) are common after manual therapy and that there is a risk of serious injury. We aimed to assess the safety of Chuna manipulation therapy (CMT), a traditional manual Korean therapy, by analysing AEs in patients who underwent this treatment. Patients who received at least one session of CMT between December 2009 and March 2019 at 14 Korean medicine hospitals were included.
