Echocardiography is the gold standard of diagnosis and evaluation of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a common condition among preterm infants that can cause hemodynamic abnormalities and increased mortality rates, but this technique requires a skilled specialist and is not always available. Meanwhile, chest X-ray (CXR) imaging is also known to exhibit signs of PDA and is a routine imaging modality in neonatal intensive care units. In this study, we aim to find and objectively define CXR image features that are associated with PDA by training and visually analyzing a deep learning model.

The carbon dioxide removal (CDR) capacity of macroalgae, a crucial component in climate regulation, has gained increasing attention. However, accurately estimating the CDR potential of macroalgae in natural conditions remains challenging, necessitating the use of multiple independent methods to reduce the uncertainties in these estimates. In this study, we compared two methods for estimating net ecosystem production (NEP), a key parameter in determining CDR potential: 1) NEP, derived from seawater carbonate chemistry and 2) NEP, based on photorespiratory measurements using benthic tent incubation.

The increase in access to facial gender-affirming surgery has resulted in an increase in facial feminization procedures for transfeminine and gender nonbinary populations. However, refined execution of facial masculinization is challenged by the lack of defined measurements for facial augmentation, the lack of long-term predictability in autologous bone grafting in augmentation procedures, and the lack of precision in traditional facial augmentation procedures with generic alloplastic implants. The authors describe an innovation in facial masculinization surgery using modern reconstructive craniofacial surgical techniques with preoperative virtual modeling and the fabrication of 3-dimensionally printed, patient-specific custom implants.

Plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a common method for fabricating HfZrO (HZO) ferroelectric thin films that can be performed using direct-plasma (DP) and remote-plasma (RP) methods. This study proposed co-plasma ALD (CPALD), where DPALD and RPALD are applied simultaneously. HZO films fabricated using this method showed wake-up-free polarization properties, no anti-ferroelectricity, and high fatigue endurance when DPALD and RPALD started simultaneously.

Conventional cell spheroid production methods are largely manual, leading to variations in size and shape that compromise consistency and reliability for use in cell-based therapeutic applications. To enhance spheroid production, a spherical shell bioprinting system was implemented, enabling the high-throughput generation of uniform cell spheroids with precisely controlled sizes. The system encapsulates cells within thin alginate hydrogel shells formed through bioprinting and ion crosslinking reactions.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors regulate blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and may also exert anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic effects by promoting M2 macrophage polarization. Although SGLT2 is expressed in brain regions that influence glucose balance and cognitive function, its roles in the central nervous system are unclear. This study investigated the effects of empagliflozin (EMPA), an SGLT2 inhibitor, on hypothalamic inflammation associated with metabolic diseases.
