A prospective randomized clinical trial comparing tibial baseplate fixation with or without screws in total knee arthroplasty: a radiographic evaluation.

In a randomized prospective study, we compared the use of tibial screws with screwless tibial baseplate fixation in uncemented total knee arthroplasty and report the results of 154 prostheses at a mean follow-up of 5 years. Patients were mobilized within 24 hours and continued with partial weight-bearing for up to 6 weeks postoperatively. There were no significant differences in radiologic results and revision rates.

Integrating medical abortion into safe abortion services: experience from three pilot sites in South Africa.

Background And Methodology: South Africa's Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1996 provides for safe termination of pregnancy (TOP) in designated facilities in the public and private health sectors. In 2001, mifepristone-misoprostol medical abortion was approved for TOP up to 56 days, but this method is not yet available in the public sector. Information on the operational requirements for integrating mifepristone-misoprostol medical abortion into South Africa's public sector safe abortion services is required to guide policy decisions.

Medical abortion: the possibilities for introduction in the public sector in South Africa.

Medical abortion is safe and effective and has been approved for use in early termination of pregnancy in South Africa since 2001. The Department of Health is currently considering its introduction in the public health sector. The attitudes of women seeking abortion and of health care providers towards medical abortion have not previously been described.

Ten years of democracy in South Africa: documenting transformation in reproductive health policy and status.

The advent of democracy in South Africa in 1994 created a unique opportunity for new lows and policies to be passed. Today, a decade later, South African reproductive health policies and the laws that underwrite them are among the most progressive and comprehensive in the world in terms of the recognition that they give to human rights, including sexual and reproductive rights. This paper documents the changes in health policy and services that have occurred, focusing particularly on key areas of sexual and reproductive health: contraception, maternal health, termination of pregnancy, cervical and breast cancer, gender-based and sexual violence, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections and infertility.
