Objective: To determine the effect of naproxen in attenuating the symptoms (muscle soreness level) and signs (plasma creatine kinase [CK] activity and muscular strength decrement) of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) induced by repeated bouts of eccentric exercise.
Design: The design was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial with two testing phases of 8 days' duration that were separated by a "washout" period of 7 days.
Setting: University-based sports science center.
Purpose: A phase III randomized trial in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was performed to determine if the addition of ifosfamide to moderate-dose cisplatin and carboplatin improved response rate (primary end point) and survival.
Patients And Methods: A total of 529 patients were randomized to receive a combination of moderate-dose carboplatin (200 mg/m2 intravenously [i.v.
The standard enthalpy of ionization of six titratable histidines in horse metaquomyoglobin was determined by repeating proton NMR titrations as a function of temperature and using the van't Hoff relationship. It was found that deltaH degrees varies between 16 and 37 kJ mol(-1) in the protein, compared with a value of 29 kJ mol(-1) in free histidine. The standard entropy change was evaluated by combining the enthalpy and free energy changes derived from the pKa values.

By analyzing metaquoMb and metcyanoMb data sets collected at various pH values, cross-peaks were assigned to the imidazole rings and their patterns interpreted. Of the nine histidines not interacting with the heme in sperm whale myoglobin, it was found that seven (His-12, His-48, His-81, His-82, His-113, His-116, and His-119) are predominantly in the N epsilon2H form with varying degrees of contribution from the Ndelta1 H form.

Objectives: Acetorphan is an orally administered inhibitor of enkephalinase in the wall of the digestive tract. It prevents inactivation of endogenous opioid peptides released by submucosal and myenteric neurons. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of acetorphan on jejunal water and electrolyte transport in healthy volunteers under basal conditions and in a state of intestinal secretion induced by a bacterial enterotoxin.

To limit this inactivation process, BP 2-94, ie., (R)-(-)-2-[[N-[1-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)-2-propyl]imino]phenylmethyl] phenol, was selected as a prodrug.

Patients And Methods: Eligible patients included in one of the 7 consecutive clinical trials conducted by the European Lung Cancer Working Party between December 1980 and August 1991. All patients received a cisplatin or carboplatin containing chemotherapy.
Fluorescent DNA-binding N,N'-dialkyl 6-(2-pyridinium)phenanthridinium dications (where dialkyl stands for -(CH2)2-or-(CH2)3-, abbreviated dq2pyp and dq3pyp, respectively) associate with GMP (guanosine-5'-monophosphate) in 0.1-mol l-1, pH 3.5-5.

Results: Among 235 eligible patients initially registered, 91 were randomized to receive maintenance therapy, including seven patients who were no longer responding. Among 84 randomized responders, progression-free survival was significantly improved (P = .
Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to sperm whale apomyoglobin to describe the conformation adopted by the protein under native conditions. The study focused on the A-B-G-H interface, a region known to form a compact subdomain in the apoprotein (Hughson and Baldwin, Biochemistry 28:4415-4422, 1989). Two histidine residues located in this subdomain, His24 and His119, interact and are thought to play a role in the acid denaturation process (Barrick et al.

Over 800 experimental restraints derived from a series of two- and three-dimensional experiments were used. Holocytochrome b5, the protein with iron protoporphyrin-IX liganded to His-39 and His-63, contains in sequence the following elements of secondary structure: beta 1-alpha 1-beta 4-beta 3-alpha 2-alpha 3-beta 5-alpha 4-alpha 5-beta 2-alpha 6 [Mathews, F.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and tolerance of acetorphan, an orally active enkephalinase inhibitor whose antidiarrhoeal properties derive from a purely antisecretory activity, to that of octreotide, a subcutaneously administered somatostatin analogue, in the treatment of refractory diarrhoea in AIDS patients.
Design: An open randomized crossover trial.
Setting: The inpatient medical units of three hospitals.
The genes for the E2 envelope protein, which elicits virus-neutralizing antibodies, from members of the newly described group II of bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDVs) were cloned and sequenced. These BVDVs included a thrombocytopenic strain from the United States, a fetal bovine serum contaminant, a strain from Western Canada, and two highly virulent strains, causing high mortality rates, from Quebec. The nucleotide and amino acid sequences of these E2s had only a 60-65% homology with group I BVDV E2s but >90% homology with the E2 of a subgroup of sheep border disease viruses.

Analyses of viral proteins showed that VP2 is the major structural and immunogenic polypeptide of the virus. All neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against IPNV are specific to VP2 and bind to continuous or discontinuous epitopes.

The larger segment contains a small ORF partly overlapping the 5' end of the polyprotein reading frame. Yet very little is known about this possible new gene, which presumably codes for a 17 kDa polypeptide (VP5).

The sequence data confirmed that the two CP strains do not possess any insertion or deletion in their p125 gene as observed in many other CP strains. In the p80, which showed a high amino acid sequence homology among all strains, no amino acid substitution should could be found which distinguished these CP strains from the NCP strains NY-1 and SD-1.
