Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii is a highly abundant bacterial endosymbiont found in many tick species, including two medically important ticks respectively found in Europe and Australia, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes holocyclus. Comparative performance study of paperboard disposable spacers versus commercial valved holding chambers for aerosol delivery.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the performance, for the administration of fluticasone propionate with a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI), of two low-tech paperboard spacers versus two commercially available valved holding chambers (VHC).

Methods: According to the Canadian standard CAN/CSA-Z264.1-02, total emitted dose (TED) and aerodynamic size distribution were measured for the pMDI in combination with 4 different spacers: a homemade paper cup spacer, the DispozABLE® paperboard spacer, the AeroChamber Plus® plastic VHC, and the Vortex® aluminium VHC.

Enhancing a Many-Body Dipolar Rydberg Tweezer Array with Arbitrary Local Controls.

New records of rove beetles from the Province of Quebec, and additional provincial records in Canada (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae).

We newly report 25 provincial records of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) from the province of Quebec from the following subfamilies: Steninae (1), Euaesthetinae (1), Omaliinae (2), Oxyporinae (1), Paederinae (1), Proteininae (1), Pselaphinae (2), Scaphidiinae (2), Scydmaeninae (2), Staphylininae (11) and Tachyporinae (1). Among these, two species are also reported for the first time from Ontario, two from Nova Scotia, and five are new Canadian records. Background: Electronic cigarettes (EC) have gained popularity, especially among young people, with the introduction of fourth-generation devices based on e-liquids containing nicotine salts that promise a smoother vaping experience than freebase nicotine. However, the toxicological effects of nicotine salts are still largely unknown, and the chemical diversity of e-liquids limits the comparison between different studies to determine the contribution of each compound to the cytotoxicity of EC aerosols. Development of a protocol of isolation of nanoparticles from patients' broncho-alveolar lavages for their toxicity assessment.

To investigate potential correlations between human exposure to inhaled particles and pathological effects, the biological monitoring of nanoparticles in broncho-alveolar lavages (BAL) from patients has been proposed. To better understand the underlying mechanisms of toxicity, we propose to couple this biomonitoring of nanoparticles to their toxicity assessment. However, BAL obtained from regular clinical practice are conditioned with sodium hypochlorite solution (in a 50% v/v ratio), which is toxic to cells.

Development of a Novel Bronchodilator Vaping Drug Delivery System Based on Thermal Degradation Properties.

This work aims to investigate bronchodilator delivery with the use of different vaping drug delivery systems (VDDS) by determining the dose equivalence delivered in relation to different references: a clinical jet nebulizer, a pMDI (pressurized metered dose inhaler) and a DPI (dry powder inhaler). Three different bronchodilators were used (terbutaline, salbutamol hemisulfate, ipratropium bromide). The e-liquids contained the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in powder form.

An integrative and multi-indicator approach for wildlife health applied to an endangered caribou herd.

Assessing wildlife health in remote regions requires a multi-faceted approach, which commonly involves convenient samplings and the need of identifying and targeting relevant and informative indicators. We applied a novel wildlife health framework and critically assessed the value of different indicators for understanding the health status and trends of an endangered tundra caribou population. Samples and data from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd were obtained between 2015 and 2021, from community-based surveillance programs and from captured animals.

An integrative perspective on fish health: Environmental and anthropogenic pathways affecting fish stress.

Multifactorial studies assessing the cumulative effects of natural and anthropogenic stressors on individual stress response are crucial to understand how organisms and populations cope with environmental change. We tested direct and indirect causal pathways through which environmental stressors affect the stress response of wild gilthead seabream in Mediterranean costal lagoons using an integrative PLS-PM approach. We integrated information on 10 environmental variables and 36 physiological variables into seven latent variables reflecting lagoons features and fish health.

[Pregnant women's use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes: A cross sectional survey].
