View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of volatile induction of general anaesthesia with sevoflurane using two different techniques and intravenous anaesthesia with propofol on the possible presence of epileptiform electroencephalograph patterns during the induction of general anaesthesia.
Methods: Sixty patients (age 18-70 years) were recruited. Exclusion criteria included history of epilepsy, neurological or neurosurgical diseases, pre-existing EPs in initial EEG recordings, medication interfering with EEG patterns.
The paper presents 47 adult patients who were surgically treated due to brainstem gliomas. Thirteen patients presented with contrast-enhancing Grades III and IV gliomas, according to the WHO classification, 13 patients with contrast-enhancing tumours originating from the glial cells (Grade I; WHO classification), 9 patients with diffuse gliomas, 5 patients with tectal brainstem gliomas and 7 patients with exophytic brainstem gliomas. During the surgical procedure, neuronavigation and the diffusion tensor tractography (DTI) of the corticospinal tract were used with the examination of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) with direct stimulation of the fundus of the fourth brain ventricle in order to define the localization of the nuclei of nerves VII, IX, X and XII.

Background: It has been suggested that red blood cell transfusions may affect the outcome and frequency of infection in patients treated in ITU settings. We have therefore retrospectively analysed the records of one hundred and sixty-three patients treated in a large tertiary intensive care unit, in order to find any relationship between red blod cell transfusions and the frequency of nosocomial infections.
Methods: The patients were allocated to two groups: T - those who were transfused and N - those who were not.
To report a case of acute intracranial subdural hematoma, pneumocephalus, and pneumorachis, which occurred because of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak caused by a malpositioned transpedicular screw during spinal surgery for severe myelodysplastic scoliosis accompanied with hydrocephalus. Intracranial hemorrhage may occur as a consequence of dural sac penetration and CSF leakage after various medical procedures at the spinal level. The awareness of this severe complication is especially important during spinal instrumentation procedures in which inadvertent dural sac violation and CSF loss may be overlooked.
