Unlabelled: We evaluated an elvitegravir-cobicistat-emtricitabine-tenofovir alafenamide single-tablet regimen for human immunodeficiency virus postexposure prophylaxis. The completion rate and adherence were good, and the tolerance was acceptable; no seroconversion was observed. We confirm that this regimen could be appropriate for postexposure prophylaxis.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 694 HIV-infected outpatients found that 14% had PTD, but common diagnostic markers were ineffective in accurately identifying it.
  • * Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate exposure was linked to PTD primarily in non-African patients, with only a small percentage experiencing a rapid decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) over time.

Objective: To assess the characteristics and outcomes of patients with AIDS-related primary CNS lymphoma (AR-PCNSL) in the combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) era systematically treated with high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed (intention-to-treat analysis) 51 consecutive patients with AR-PCNSL (median age 39 years) who were diagnosed from 1996 to 2014 and treated with a median of 6 (range 1-15) infusions of HD-MTX (3 g/m) combined with cART.

Results: Median all-patients' and survivors' follow-up lasted 23 (range 0-186) and 76 (range 23-186) months, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the factors associated with viral failure in HIV-positive infants born in France, focusing on maternal psychological issues and the children's environment.
  • Out of 1061 infants followed, 14 were diagnosed with HIV before age 1, with differences in viral control linked to the mothers' mental health, particularly severe psychological disorders.
  • The findings emphasize that maternal mental health significantly impacts treatment adherence and the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, suggesting a need for greater support for affected families.

Background: Body piercing has become widespread and is associated with increased complications. Post-piercing chondritis may lead to severe residual deformity. We aimed to report case patients presenting with post-piercing chondritis in our department and to describe clinical features and treatment.

Objectives: To study the single-tablet regimen (STR) combination rilpivirine/tenofovir/emtricitabine (RPV/TDF/FTC) as soon as it became available. We describe a 14 month follow-up in a real clinical setting with a focus on resistance to RPV/TDF/FTC and polymorphisms associated with these drugs.

Methods: We estimated drug resistance at STR baseline by combining all available resistance tests, resulting in a cumulative virtual genotype.

Objectives: Amino acid insertions in the protease gene have been reported rarely, and mainly in patients receiving protease inhibitors (PIs). The aim of the study was to assess the long-term viro-immunological follow-up of HIV-infected patients harbouring virus with protease insertions.

Methods: Cases of virus exhibiting protease insertions were identified in routine resistance genotyping tests.

Background: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common opportunistic pathogen infecting immunocompromised patients after transplantation. Although its immunomodulatory capacities and genomic variability participate in immune system evasion, they are poorly studied in clinical strains without culture amplification. One of HCMV immunomodulatory genes, UL40, confers HCMV-infected cells' protection from natural killer-mediated lysis through its encoded nonapeptide presented in the context of human leukocyte antigen-E.

Dihydropteroate synthase gene (DHPS) mutations at codons 55 and 57 have been associated with sulfa/sulfone resistance in Pneumocystis jirovecii strains from patients who previously received prophylaxis. To evaluate the prevalence of these mutations, a portion of P. jirovecii DHPS gene was analysed using PCR combined with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis in 92 bronchoalveolar fluid samples collected between January 1998 and September 2001 from French patients with pulmonary pneumocystosis (PCP).

Objective: To evaluate the evolving characteristics of HIV-related Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) and survival of affected patients since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

Design And Methods: A retrospective single-institution study was performed over a 15-year follow-up period. For statistical analysis, patients were categorized into a pre-HAART period (1987-1996, n = 61) and a post-HAART period (1997-2001, n = 47).

CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES: Piercing, an act that modifies the body, has progressed considerably in France over the last few years. The population involved has grown and become more diversified. Performed with a solid needle or a catheter, a wide variety of anatomic localizations are concerned, particularly the nose, ears, and navel.

We describe 12 cases of AIDS-related primary pulmonary lymphoma occurring between 1986 and 1996 in a large French cohort of HIV-infected patients. Diagnostic criteria were: (1) histologically proven lymphomatous pulmonary involvement; (2) absence of mediastinal and/or hilar adenopathy on chest radiography; (3) absence of extrathoracic lymphoma extension. All patients were severely immunodeficient at the time of diagnosis.

Design: An uncontrolled pilot trial.

Setting: An infectious diseases department in Paris, France.

We conducted a prospective observational study to determine the feasibility and impact of rifabutin prophylaxis (300 mg daily) for human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients whose CD4 cell counts were <100/mm3. Three hundred seventy-one patients (65.2% of all patients with CD4 cell counts of <100/mm3 [mean +/- SD, 30 +/- 25/mm3]) received rifabutin prophylaxis for a mean duration +/- SD of 35.

Objectives: Neurologic infections caused by cytomegalovirus are common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The prognosis is particularly severe when the infection is localized in the conus medullaris and/or the cauda equina.

Methods: Among the 861 patients with AIDS treated in our unit from 1991 to 1993, 7 cases involving cytomegalovirus infection of the conus medullaris and/or the cauda equina were studied retrospectively.

In patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), manifestations of generalized Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection are non-specific and pneumopathy is rarely encountered. We report a case of a patient with AIDS who had clinical and radiological manifestations of multifocal alveolar pneumopathy which was found on autopsy to be due to disseminated Mycobacterium avium intracellulare.
