Purpose: The last updates to diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis (MS) included a diagnostic category of 'possible MS'. However, no recent data is available to assess how much this distinction helps predict MS after isolated optic neuritis (ON). This study aimed to assess the global risk of developing MS one year after a first ON episode, and the specific risk according to the initial diagnosis of isolated ON or ON with possible MS.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is managed across 26 medical centers in France, focusing on the structure and availability of treatment services.
  • Researchers contacted 28 centers to gather data through a questionnaire about multidisciplinary meetings, dedicated services, and treatment methods.
  • The findings revealed that while a majority have dedicated services and utilize first-line treatments like intravenous corticosteroids, there’s significant variability in practices, highlighting the need for standardization and improving accessibility to new treatments like tocilizumab and teprotumumab.

Introduction: Training novice ophthalmology residents on the EyeSi simulator increases cataract surgery safety. However, there is no consensus regarding how much training residents should perform before their first time on patients. We evaluated the French national training program through the analysis of the learning curves of novice residents.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of treatment of optic neuritis (ON) with corticosteroids (CTC) alone, CTC+plasmapheresis (PLP), and CTC+intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

Design: After an episode of ON, although visual recovery is usually good, some patients may have significant visual sequelae. While the efficacy of first-line CTC is now indisputable, there is no consensus on the nature of second-line treatment.

Background: The 30-day readmission rate provides a standardised quantitative evaluation of some postoperative complications. It is widely used worldwide in many medical and surgical specialities, and the World Health Organization recommends its use for monitoring healthcare system performance. In ophthalmology, its measurement is biased by the frequent and close planned surgery on one eye and then the other, particularly in the case of cataract surgery.

Introduction: Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in France. While the incidence of intraoperative complications affecting visual prognosis is extremely low, given the large number of patients operated on, the absolute number of patients affected by complications is quite high. Complication rates are significantly higher when ophthalmology residents (ORs) perform the surgery.

Introduction: In the case of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), eye examination is systematic to detect retinal hemorrhages (RH) that are a crucial hallmark for abusive head trauma (AHT). The aim of this study is to assess the ability of non-invasive post-mortem fundus photographs (PMFP) to detect RH in case of SUDI.

Methods: Bicentric retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of SUDI under 2 years of age were managed by two French SUDI referral centers with PMFP by RetCam (Clarity Medical Systems USA).

Introduction: Orbital floor fractures (OFF) are common facial trauma injuries, and there are no official guidelines for their medical and surgical management. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the management of OFF in France.

Materials And Methods: An online questionnaire was sent to 144 surgeons at the 88 French centers involved in the management of OFF (2019 data from the National Health Insurance Body).

Introduction: XEN 45® gel stent is an ab interno aqueous humor drainage device indicated for moderate glaucoma refractory to medical management. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). However, there are few studies on secondary glaucoma, including steroid-induced glaucoma (CG), defined as optic neuropathy induced by using local or systemic corticosteroids without increased flare.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how central and peripheral vision function differently during visual tasks in virtual reality, compared to traditional 2D screens.
  • The researchers replicated gaze-contingent experiments to simulate vision loss and explored how head movements affect visual attention in a wide field of view environment.
  • Findings reveal new visuo-motor behaviors in 360° settings, indicating that eye movements are mainly affected by vision loss, while head movements primarily facilitate scene exploration, which can inform gaze prediction models for VR applications.

Graves' orbitopathy is the most common extra-thyroid complication of Graves' disease and can be a potentially severe affection, therefore requiring multidisciplinary treatment support according to clinical activity and severity assessments. This review proposes to determine physiopathological mechanisms, epidemiology and therapeutic management of Graves' orbitopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • - Optic neuritis (ON) can occur as a standalone issue or be linked to various inflammatory or infectious diseases, and its classification can change over time due to overlapping symptoms and varying diagnostic criteria.
  • - Proper diagnosis of ON is crucial and should be swift, involving procedures like MRI, spinal fluid analysis, and blood tests to differentiate it from other conditions, especially in initial cases.
  • - There is an emphasis on early detection and specific treatments for ON to prevent relapses, particularly in children where screenings for specific antibodies (like MOG-IgG and AQP4-IgG) are recommended, but still debated for adults.

Introduction: Thanks to the progress made in the past few years in pediatric intensive care as well as the increased survival of preterm infants, the consequences of premature birth are increasingly well documented. With regard to ophthalmologic complications, retinopathy of prematurity is well described, but the optic nerve may also be affected. The goal of this study is to compare the optic nerves of preterm infants as a function of their gestational period with a control group of the same age.

In light of the international literature, a workgroup of experts from the AFSOP met in February 2019 to formulate updated recommendations for visual screening in children. An ophthalmologic examination during the first month of life is recommended for children at risk of developing infantile organic amblyopia. An ophthalmologic examination including cycloplegic refraction between 12 and 15 months of age is recommended for children at risk of developing functional amblyopia.

Introduction: UT-DSAEK is a recent technique developed in order to obtain grafts thinner than a conventional DSAEK (less than 100 microns). The goal of this study was to evaluate the anatomic and clinical results over a period of one year for a retrospective series of UT-DSAEK procedures at the University Hospital of Nantes, using pre-cut grafts provided by a tissue bank, and to compare results with other existing techniques: DSAEK and DMEK.

Methods: In this retrospective, single-center study, all patients requiring an endothelial graft over a one-year period were included.

Background: The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to compare the clinical results obtained after primary reconstruction of orbital floor fractures (OFF) using different materials.

Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases were screened from 1989 to 2019. For a study to be eligible, it had to evaluate two or more materials and report the following clinical parameters: diplopia and/or enophthalmos and/or other complications.

Purpose: To measure the predictive values of relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) assessed semi-quantitatively, and visual acuity (VA) at onset of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), for neovascularization.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of the TROXHEMO trial that included patients with CRVO within 30 days after the onset. Inclusion criteria were as follows: semi-quantitative RAPD assessment at diagnosis and/or at one month.

Purpose: The clinical utility of rituximab (RTX) in Graves' orbitopathy (GO) treatment remains controversial since the discrepant results from 2 prospective randomized studies (Stan M et al. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2015; Salvi M et al. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2015).

Purpose: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign fibro-osseous developmental disorder of growing bone, sometimes involving the craniofacial skeleton (CFD). We wish to present a patient series with CFD of the orbital region and discuss treatment modalities.

Methods: Twelve patients were referred for orbital CFD in the Nantes University Hospital between 2000 and 2018 and studied according to the clinical parameters, radiological features, and modalities of treatment.
