In this study, we sought to investigate the effectiveness of inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement in reducing the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients diagnosed with isolated calf deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after an intracranial hemorrhage or intracranial operation. A retrospective chart review (January 2000-December 2019) was performed to identify patients diagnosed with calf DVT after intracranial hemorrhage or intracranial operation. A total of 100 patients met the study criteria and were divided into groups based on treatment: IVC filter placement (n = 22), prophylactic anticoagulation (n = 42), or imaging surveillance (n = 36).

Background Certain echocardiographic parameters may serve as early predictors of adverse events in patients with hemodynamically compromising pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods and Results An observational analysis was conducted for patients with acute pulmonary embolism evaluated by a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) between 2014 and 2020. The performance of clinical prediction algorithms including the Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index and Carl Bova score were compared using a ratio of right ventricle and left ventricle hemodynamics by dividing the pulmonary artery systolic pressure by the left ventricle stroke volume.

Emerging evidence suggests that novel COVID-19 is associated with increased prothrombotic state and risk of thromboembolic complications, particularly in severe disease. COVID-19 is known to predispose to both venous and arterial thrombotic disease.
