Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the clinical characteristics and incidence of hypersensitivity reactions to sugammadex in Australia, with a focus on cases identified through skin testing at six allergy clinics.
  • - Out of 30 cases analyzed, symptoms primarily included hypotension and flushing, with the median recognition time for reactions being 5 minutes post-administration; life-threatening and non-life-threatening cases showed distinct patterns in tryptase positivity.
  • - The estimated incidence of sugammadex hypersensitivity was found to be 0.004%, which is lower than previous reports, indicating that while these reactions can occur, they are relatively rare.

Healthcare simulation has significant potential for helping health services to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Rapid changes to care pathways and processes needed for protection of staff and patients may be facilitated by a translational simulation approach-diagnosing changes needed, developing and testing new processes and then embedding new systems and teamwork through training. However, there are also practical constraints on running in situ simulations during a pandemic-the need for physical distancing, rigorous infection control for manikins and training equipment and awareness of heightened anxiety among simulation participants.

Background: The length polymorphism repeat in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (5HTTLPR) is one of the most studied polymorphisms for association with a range of psychiatric and personality phenotypes. However, the original 5HTTLPR assay is prone to bias toward short allele calling.

Methods: We designed new assays for the 5HTTLPR suitable for large-scale genotyping projects and we genotyped 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a 38-kilobase region around the 5HTTLPR, including SNP rs25531, a polymorphism of the 5HTTLPR long allele.
