Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to improve the accuracy of using the inferior petrosal sinus to peripheral ACTH gradient (IPS:P) test in differentiating between Cushing's disease (CD) and ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS) before and after desmopressin stimulation.
  • - Out of 50 patients studied, the IPS:P test showed high sensitivity rates ranging from 85.1% to 97.9% depending on the cutoff values used, with a consistent specificity of 100%.
  • - The results indicate that desmopressin stimulation enhances the diagnostic reliability of the IPS:P test, leading to quicker and more accurate responses in identifying ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome.

Objective: Massive hemoptysis is one of the most serious complications in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study aimed to evaluate the hemoptysis-free period following bronchial and non-bronchial artery embolization (BAE/non-BAE) in CF patients and to investigate predictors of recurrent bleeding and mortality by any cause.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of CF patients ≥ 16 years of age undergoing BAE/non-BAE for hemoptysis between 2000 and 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver cancer is a major health issue, ranking fifth in incidence and fourth in cancer-related deaths globally, with about 854,000 new cases and 810,000 deaths annually, predominantly from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
  • There are various staging systems to assess HCC, but the lack of a unified definition for advanced disease complicates treatment and prognosis, leading to ongoing debate in the medical community.
  • Treatment options for advanced HCC include curative methods like transplantation and resection, as well as locoregional and systemic therapies, which should be tailored for each patient through a multidisciplinary approach.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and transarterial embolization (TAE) have improved the survival rates of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, the optimal TACE/TAE embolic agent has not yet been identified. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two different embolic agents such as microspheres (ME) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on survival, tumor response, and complications in patients with HCC submitted to transarterial embolization (TAE). Eighty HCC patients who underwent TAE between June 2008 and December 2012 at a single center were retrospectively studied.

Aim: To investigate the survival rates after transarterial embolization (TAE).

Methods: One hundred third six hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients [90 barcelona clinic liver cancer (BCLC) B] were submitted to TAE between August 2008 and December 2013 in a single center were retrospectively studied. TAE was performed via superselective catheterization followed by embolization with polyvinyl alcohol or microspheres.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate if a specific monitoring and intervention strategy for native arteriovenous fistulas (NAFs) used in hemodialysis could reduce complications compared to standard care.
  • *108 patients with 111 NAFs were split into a control group receiving standard care and an interventional group receiving regular clinical and ultrasound surveillance, with additional treatment for significant issues.
  • *Results showed that the interventional group had a significantly lower need for temporary central venous catheters, while both groups showed similar rates of thrombosis, highlighting the effectiveness of proactive monitoring and intervention.*
