The South African guidelines on enuresis: 2024 update.

Background: Enuresis, also referred to as nocturnal enuresis, is characterised by discrete episodes of urinary incontinence during sleep in children aged ≥5 years in the absence of congenital or acquired neurological disorders. This guideline is an update of the 2017 version.

Recommendations: The guideline provides recommendations and suggestions for various therapeutic options for enuresis available in South Africa (SA).

Cofilin, an actin-severing protein, plays key roles in muscle sarcomere addition and maintenance. Our previous work found that Drosophila cofilin (DmCFL) knockdown in muscle causes progressive deterioration of muscle structure and function and produces features seen in nemaline myopathy caused by cofilin mutations. We hypothesized that disruption of actin cytoskeleton dynamics by DmCFL knockdown would impact other aspects of muscle development, and, thus, conducted an RNA-sequencing analysis that unexpectedly revealed upregulated expression of numerous neuromuscular junction (NMJ) genes.

Associations between circadian alignment and cognitive functioning in a nationally representative sample of older adults.

Proper alignment of activity-rest and light-dark patterns allows for healthy bodily functions to occur at optimal times of the day. Disruptions to this alignment may cause poor sleep as well as physical, mental, and cognitive problems. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine if poorer circadian alignment was associated with decreased cognitive functioning among older (> 60 years) participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Long-term healthcare utilisation, costs and quality of life after invasive group B disease: a cohort study in five low-income and middle-income countries.

Introduction: There are no published data on the long-term impact of invasive group B disease (iGBS) on economic costs or health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in low-income and middle-income countries. We assessed the impact of iGBS on healthcare utilisation, costs and HRQoL in Argentina, India, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.

Methods: Inpatient and outpatient visits, out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare payments in the 12 months before study enrolment, and health-state utility of children and caregivers (using the EuroQol 5-Dimensions-3-Level) were collected from iGBS survivors and an unexposed cohort matched on site, age at recruitment and sex.

Background: Unusual olfactory perception, often referred to as "phantosmia" or "cacosmia" has been reported during brain radiotherapy (RT), but is infrequent and does not typically interfere with the ability to deliver treatment. We seek to determine the rate of phantosmia for patients treated with proton craniospinal irradiation (CSI) and identify any potential clinical or treatment-related associations.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 127 pediatric patients treated with CSI, followed by a boost to the brain for primary brain tumors in a single institution between 2016 and 2021.

Previous studies have reported increased retinal venous oxygen saturation and decreased retinal blood flow and oxygen metabolism in non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). The current study aimed to determine alterations in both inner retinal oxygen delivery (DO) and metabolism (MO) in proliferative DR (PDR) as well as at stages of NPDR. A key fermentation by-product is hydrogen (H), which acts as the source of reducing potential for methane (CH) formation in hydrogenotrophic methanogens. The cultivation of hydrogenotrophic rumen methanogens requires pressurised H which limits the ability to conduct high-throughput screening experiments with these organisms.

Surgery and proton radiation therapy for pediatric base of skull chordomas: Long-term clinical outcomes for 204 patients.

Background: Data on clinical outcomes for base of skull (BOS) chordomas in the pediatric population is limited. We report patient outcomes after surgery and proton radiotherapy (PRT).

Methods: Pediatric patients with BOS chordomas were treated with PRT or combined proton/photon approach (proton-based; for most, 80% proton/20% photon) at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1981 to 2021.

Is There Evidence of an Association Between Acute Health Care Utilization and Function in Older Adults Over Time? A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Background And Objectives: Acute health care use varies by age, with older adults the highest users of acute health care services. Using data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), the aim of this study was to investigate the association between acute health care utilization (emergency department [ED] visit with or without hospitalization) at baseline and subjective and objective measures of function measured at 4-year follow-up.

Research Design And Methods: This study represents a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study, where data from Wave 1 (baseline) and Wave 3 of TILDA were analyzed in conjunction with a public and patient involvement group of older adults.

Genomic insights into the physiology of Quinella, an iconic uncultured rumen bacterium.

Quinella is a genus of iconic rumen bacteria first reported in 1913. There are no cultures of these bacteria, and information on their physiology is scarce and contradictory. Increased abundance of Quinella was previously found in the rumens of some sheep that emit low amounts of methane (CH) relative to their feed intake, but whether Quinella contributes to low CH emissions is not known.

Impairments of retinal hemodynamics and oxygen metrics in ocular hypertension-induced ischemia-reperfusion.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is an established model for retinal neurodegeneration. However, there is limited knowledge of retinal physiological metrics and their relationships to retinal function and morphology in the I/R model.
