Article Synopsis
  • Enteric duplication cysts (EDCs) are uncommon congenital malformations characterized by cystic or tubular structures that contain gastrointestinal-type epithelium, typically sharing a muscular wall and blood supply with nearby bowels.
  • Most EDCs are found in the abdomen, with rare cases occurring in the thoracic region; however, this case reports the first primary cutaneous EDC outside these cavities.
  • A 17-year-old male had a cyst on his hip excised, revealing a complex epithelial structure and thick muscular wall, indicating a primary cutaneous EDC with an uncertain cause, highlighting a potential diagnostic challenge.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are widely distributed in the environment and are almost always acquired into the lungs by bioaerosol inhalation or aspiration of NTM-contaminated water, biofilms, and soil. NTM are increasingly recognized as causes of lung diseases in immunocompetent hosts, a not insignificant number of whom have a life-long or nearly life-long slender body habitus as well as thoracic cage abnormalities such as scoliosis and pectus excavatum. While several hypotheses have been offered to explain the purported increase in susceptibility to NTM lung disease in such individuals, the precise explanation remains unknown.

Notalgia paresthetica is a syndrome of unilateral, chronic pruritis that is associated with burning pain, paresthesia, numbness, and hyperesthesia localized to the medial and inferior scapula. The condition does not respond to anti-inflammatory drugs or traditional antipruritic agents and has variable responses to numerous other reported pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies. Although the etiology is thought to be nerve impingement, neurologic and musculoskeletal causes are often not considered in the differential diagnosis.

Liquiritigenin [2,3-dihydro-7-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-(S)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one] is one of the major active compounds of MF101, an herbal extract currently in clinical trials for the treatment of hot flashes and night sweats in postmenopausal women. MF101 is a selective estrogen receptor beta agonist but does not activate the estrogen receptor alpha. Incubation with pooled human liver microsomes yielded a single metabolite.
