Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by mitochondrial derangement and oxidative stress. With no known cure for T2D, it is critical to identify mitochondrial biomarkers for early diagnosis of prediabetes and disease prevention. Here we examined 87 participants on the diagnosis power of fasting glucose (FG) and hemoglobin A1c levels and investigated their interactions with mitochondrial DNA methylation.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial changes are linked to metabolic disorders like obesity and diabetes, but the specific mechanisms in humans are not well understood.
  • Research shows that obese individuals have significantly lower mitochondrial DNA copy numbers (mtDNAn), which correlates with insulin resistance but not with glucose or lipid levels.
  • Increased DNA methylation in the mitochondrial D-loop region was found in obese and insulin-resistant people, indicating a possible connection between insulin signaling and mitochondrial function through epigenetic changes.
