The use of depth of anesthesia monitoring, such as a processed electroencephalogram (pEEG), can decrease the risk of awareness with recall, yet the current standards for monitoring during the administration of anesthesia do not include the use of brain monitoring for anesthetic depth. This retrospective cohort study describes the frequency of use and explores the characteristics of utilization of pEEG monitoring by anesthesia professionals during the administration of general anesthesia in the adult patient population at a large academic medical center. Descriptive associations with pEEG monitoring were confirmed in both univariate and multivariable analyses with multiple patient, anesthetic, and surgical characteristics.

In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for the threat burnout has on clinician and patient safety, and in response, many stakeholders are advocating for solutions at the systems level. As a health-care organization, surveying clinicians is central to understanding burnout's prevalence and impact. This quality improvement project assessed well-being metrics among advanced practice providers (APPs) in a large academic medical center and found statistically significant relationships between burnout, professional fulfillment, and turnover.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by vocal and motor tics lasting more than a year. It is highly polygenic in nature with both rare and common previously associated variants. Epidemiological studies have shown TS to be correlated with other phenotypes, but large-scale phenome wide analyses in biobank level data have not been performed to date.

Aims: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare heart disease, occurring in previously heart-healthy women during the last month of pregnancy or the first months after delivery due to left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction. A common pathomechanistic pathway of PPCM includes increased oxidative stress and the subsequent generation of a cleaved prolactin fragment (16 kDa PRL), which promotes the onset of heart failure (HF) in a microRNA (miR)-146a-dependent manner. Inhibition of prolactin secretion with the dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) agonist bromocriptine combined with standard HF therapy supports cardiac recovery.

Zoledronic acid (ZOL), a nitrogen bisphosphonate (N-BP), is currently used to treat and control pediatric osteolytic diseases. Variations in the intensity of the effects and side effects of N-BPs have been reported with no clear explanations regarding their origins. We wonder if such variations could be associated with different levels of RANKL signaling activity in growing bone during and after the treatment with N-BPs.

Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of fosfomycin-resistant strains among ESBL-producing Escherichia coli isolates recovered from community patients in Switzerland. A total of 1225 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were collected between 2012 and 2013 from a private and community laboratory.

Article Synopsis
  • RANKL signaling is crucial for the development of various organs, including bone structure, and its absence leads to an osteopetrotic condition in mutant mice, though initially this condition appeared less severe than expected.
  • Research involving second-generation mutant pups showed a more severe osteopetrotic phenotype and perinatal lethality, confirming the importance of RANKL in skeletal morphogenesis.
  • The findings suggest that the milder phenotype in first-generation mutants was due to compensatory effects from RANKL derived from the mother.

The rapid fosfomycin/ NP test was developed to detect fosfomycin resistance in isolates. The test is based on glucose metabolization and the detection of bacterial growth in the presence of fosfomycin at 40 µg/ml. Bacterial growth is visually detectable by an orange-to-yellow color change of red phenol, a pH indicator.

Osteosarcoma is the most frequent form of malignant pediatric bone tumor. Despite the current therapeutic arsenal, patient life-expectancy remains low if metastases are detected at the time of diagnosis, justifying research into better knowledge at all stages of osteosarcoma ontogenesis and identification of new therapeutic targets. Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor κB (RANK)expression has been reported in osteosarcoma cells, raising the question of Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor κB Ligand (RANKL)/RANK signaling implications in these tumor cells (intrinsic), in addition to previously reported implications through osteoclast activation in the tumor microenvironment (extrinsic).
