In older patients, frailty and anemia often happen together, but not much research has been done on this.
A study analyzed 208 older hospital patients and found that frail patients had a higher rate of anemia (84.3%) compared to those who were pre-frail (70.6%).
The research suggests that inflammation is a key reason for anemia in frail patients, rather than just being due to other illnesses or a lack of vitamins.
