Purpose: Although the polymorphisms of erythrocyte complement receptor type 1 (CR1) in patients with malaria have been extensively studied, a question of whether the polymorphisms of CR1 are associated with severe malaria remains controversial. Furthermore, no study has examined the association of CR1 polymorphisms with malaria in Chinese population. Therefore, we investigated the relationship of CR1 gene polymorphism and malaria in Chinese population.

Associations of IL-27 polymorphisms and serum IL-27p28 levels with osteosarcoma risk.

Interleukin (IL)-27 is a novel cytokine secreted by stimulation of antigen-presenting cells. No previous studies currently reported the role of IL-27 in the carcinogenesis of osteosarcoma. We aimed to investigate the association of IL-27 polymorphisms and serum IL-27p28 with osteosarcoma risk in a Chinese population.

Correlation between OPN gene polymorphisms and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Previous studies suggest that osteopontin (OPN) levels are associated with the incidence and development of multiple types of cancer. This study analyzes the correlation between OPN gene variants and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). A total of 150 NPC patients and 150 healthy adults were enrolled and divided into NPC and control groups.

Association of interleukin-8 gene polymorphisms with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Interleukin-8 (IL8) polymorphisms have been implicated in several cancers, but their roles in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are largely unknown. The present study was designed to explore the association between IL8 polymorphism and the risk of HCC in a Chinese population. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the IL8 gene -251A/T, +781C/T, -353A/T and +678T/C were analyzed in 205 HCC patients and 208 healthy controls in a Chinese population.

The association of L-selectin polymorphisms with L-selectin serum levels and risk of ischemic stroke.

L-selectin is a member of the selectin family of cell adhesion molecules which are important in the transient attachment of leukocytes to endothelial cells, which plays a role in inflammation processes and is one of the earliest events in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. No studies have examined the association of this polymorphism with ischemic stroke. Therefore, we investigated that L-selectin gene polymorphism and its soluble level are associated with ischemic stroke in Chinese population.

[Inhibition of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication using antisense LNA targeting to both S and C genes in HBV].

Objective: To investigate the inhibitory effect on HBV replication of antisense locked nucleic acid (LNA) targeting to both S and C genes in HBV transgenic mice.

Methods: Thirty HBV transgenic mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6): glucose control group were treated with 5% glucose solution, liposome control group were treated with liposome alone, S group were treated with LNA targeting to S gene, C group were treated with LNA targeting to C gene, and dual-target group were treated with LNA targeting to both S and C genes. Antisense LNA was injected into mice via the tail vein.

Interleukin-18 gene promoter polymorphism and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a Chinese population.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common cancers in southern China. In addition to environmental factors such as Epstein-Barr virus infection and chemical carcinogen exposure, genetic susceptibility has been reported to play a key role in the development of this disease. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a multifunctional cytokine that induces interferon-gamma secretion and plays an important role in antitumor immunity.
