Renal failure is common among the long-term care (LTC) elderly. Little is known about the acid/base status of these patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the acid base status and renal function in a representative group of skilled nursing patients and relate it to their feeding status.

The analysis of results of magnetic resonance tomography was performed in 289 patients with neurological complications of lumbar osteochondrosis. Among such patients radicular and reflectoral syndromes were observed in 184 patients while diskogenic lumbar-sacral radiculomyeloischemias--in 105 ones. The high informativity of the method was demonstrated in visualisation of localisation, direction and sizes of intervertebral disks' hernias at lumbar osteochondrosis as well as in establishment of such factors which predisposed diskogenic radiculomyeloischemias' development.

The method is based on the use of alamethicin which increases the permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane for NADH and ATP. It has been shown that prolonged cold adaptation of rats (4 weeks, 4 degrees) does not change the activity of rotenone-sensitive NADH-oxidase in rat skeletal muscle homogenates which is equal to 12.

Magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) was used in examinations of 172 patients with spinal cord abnormalities. Thirty-eight cysts were detected: 25 in syringomyelia, 5 in intramedullary tumors, 4 posttraumatic and 4 postoperational ones. Based on the MRT patterns, two types of syringomyelia were distinguished, the occlusive and idiopathic ones.

The production of autoantibodies (AAB) to the specific antigen of myelin-containing components of the nervous tissue galactocerebroside (GalC) was revealed in 117 patients with traumatic injuries to the spinal cord of various severity in periods of 18 months to 46 years after the injury. The degree of nervous system destruction, the type of the course of posttraumatic myelopathy, and the level of production of AAB to GalC were found interrelated. The existence of AAB provides evidence of sensitization of the immune system to nervous tissue antigens in spinal cord injury, while the level of AAB to GalC reflects the activity of the continuing destructive process due to the injuring effect of AAB under conditions of impaired permeability of the blood-brain barrier and shows the desirability of desensitization therapy.

X-ray signs of three types of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament were defined and specified: linear, curved and mixed. The linear type was more frequently observed in the cervical spine whereas the curved type was more frequent in the lumbar spine.

The immobilized restriction endonucleases have the unchanged substrate specificity, can be used several times and are stable at storage. Tritylaminopropylsilochrom is suggested to be the sorbent of choice.

No effect on metabolic function of isolated liver mitochondria has been found in contrast to the vitamin K deficient rats. Mitochondria were characterized by high value of respiration control; substance oxidation rates and internal mitochondrial Ca2+ content do not differ in the level from those of control animals.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAlimentary deficiency of vitamin K caused a decrease in the rate of respiration in presence of ADP and in the rate of oxidative phosphorylation in the presence of succinate. Administration of the antivitamin K pelentane, excess of vikasol and deficiency of vitamin D did not affect these parameters. As distinct from controls and rats treated with pelentane, transport of calcium was decreased in presence of all the substrates studied in mitochondria isolated from liver tissue of animals deprived of vitamins K and D as well as of animals treated with vikasol excess.

Measurements were made of the titers of autoantibodies to antigenic markers of oligodendrocytes and myelin galactocerebrosides in the blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid from 29 patients with ischemic cerebrospinal insult and 100 patients with ischemic myelopathy. Acute and chronic disorders of spinal circulation were found to be associated with production of auto-antibodies to galactocerebrosides. The interrelationship was discovered between the fact of auto-antibody production and the degree of the recovery of deranged function (in poor recovery, auto-antibodies were preserved in the blood serum up to 3 years in diagnostically significant titers).

Study of 36 cases of ischemic myelopathy following a pseudotumorous course and 30 cases of spinal cord tumors revealed similarity and differences in the clinical manifestations which should be taken into account in differential diagnosis. Authentic differences in the content of serotonin and its metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid and blood of this group of patients are pointed out.

It was found that the inhibiting effect of H+ is independent of protonation of functional groups of hypothetical Ca2+ carrier, but results from electrogenic transfer of H+ across the membrane, which is highly permeable for the proton. The adsorption of H+ by mitochondria is inhibited by ruthenium red and other specific inhibitors of Ca2+ transport.

The most active agent--perchlorate of the cobalt complex 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19-decamethyloctadehydrocorrin--is capable of shunting the electron transfer chain of rat liver mitochondria and beef heart submitochondrial particles, catalyzing electron transfer from CoQ directly to the oxygen.
