Aims: While factors associated with adverse events are well elucidated in setting of isolated left ventricular dysfunction, clinical and imaging-based prognosticators of adverse outcomes are lacking in context of biventricular dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to establish role of clinical variables in prognosis of biventricular heart failure (HF), as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods: Study cohort consisted of 840 patients enrolled in DERIVATE registry with coexisting CMR-derived right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, as defined by RV and LV ejection fractions ≤45 % and ≤ 50 %, respectively.

Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a rare heart muscle disease defined by the presence of prominent left ventricular trabeculation, deep intertrabecular recesses, and a thin compact layer. Several hypotheses have been proposed regarding its pathogenesis, with the most recently accepted one being that compact layer and trabeculated layers develop independently according to an "allometric growth". The current gold-standard diagnostic criteria (in particular, the Petersen index non-compaction/compaction ratio > 2.

Over the last 20 years, the scientific progresses in molecular biology and genetics in combination with the increasing use in the clinical setting of contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for morpho-functional imaging and structural myocardial tissue characterization have provided important new insights into our understanding of the distinctive aspects of cardiomyopathy, regarding both the genetic and biologic background and the clinical phenotypic features. This has led to the need of an appropriate revision and upgrading of current nosographic framework and pathobiological categorization of heart muscle disorders. This article proposes a new definition and classification of cardiomyopathies that rely on the combination of the distinctive pathobiological basis (genetics, molecular biology and pathology) and the clinical phenotypic pattern (morpho-functional and structural features), leading to the proposal of three different disease categories, each of either genetic or non-genetic etiology and characterized by a combined designation based on both "anatomic" and "functional" features, i.

This study aims to deepen knowledge of the biodegradation of plastics, focusing on polypropylene (PP) fabric from surgical masks and polystyrene (PS) by larvae of Zophobas atratus as well as of specialized bacterial consortia from their gut, which were obtained in different enrichment conditions (aerobic, anaerobic, presence or absence of combined nitrogen). Plastics ingested by larvae obtained in Spain did not show any signs of oxidation but only limited depolymerization, preferably from the lowest molecular weight chains. Gut microbiota composition changed as an effect of plastic feeding.

  • The study aimed to investigate the occurrence and outcomes of significant tricuspid valve regurgitation (TRI) following transvenous lead extraction (TLE) using mechanical rotational sheaths in patients with previously implanted leads.
  • Out of 158 patients monitored, 5.7% experienced significant TRI post-extraction linked to prolonged lead implantation, tricuspid valve damage, and reasons for extraction like infection.
  • Notably, severe TRI was identified as an independent mortality risk factor, emphasizing the need for physicians to closely observe patients for this complication during the TLE procedure.

While extensive research has focused on understanding the degradation mechanisms of Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAC) paint under different environmental conditions, limited attention has been paid to the long-term stability of PVAC-based white glues, especially when used in artworks. This study investigates the accelerated degradation, under simulated photoaging, and isothermal treatment of a commercial PVAC-based white glue considered representative of this class of materials used in contemporary artworks to predict its durability and assess its behavior in art objects. Through accelerated aging experiments and comparison with natural aging observed in artworks, the study reveals the formation of chromophores and the release of plasticizers as key processes; in particular, the progressive darkening was considered an early indicator of degradation processes, before structural changes could be detected by FTIR or NMR spectroscopies.

Understanding energy expenditure in children with chronic disease is critical due to the impact on energy homeostasis and growth. This systematic review aimed to describe available literature of resting (REE) and total energy expenditure (TEE) in children with chronic disease measured by gold-standard methods of indirect calorimetry (IC) and doubly labeled water (DLW), respectively. A literature search was conducted using OVID Medline, Embase, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane, and Scopus until July 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) can lead to ventricular arrhythmias (VA) even without significant valve regurgitation, which might be influenced by conditions like mitral annulus disjunction (MAD), curling, and myocardial fibrosis.
  • A study with 108 MVP patients found that those with arrhythmic MVP had greater MAD, higher prevalence of curling, and more left ventricular fibrosis compared to non-arrhythmic patients.
  • The results suggested that curling directly and indirectly affects VA, while MAD’s association with VA is completely mediated by myocardial fibrosis, indicating that more severe morphologic changes correlate with the severity of VA.

A series of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based block copolymers with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as sacrificial bock were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization and used as precursors for the synthesis of porous carbons. The carbons enriched with O- and S-containing groups, introduced by controlled oxidation and sulfuration, respectively, were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and their surface textural properties were measured by a volumetric analyzer. We observed that the presence of sulfur tends to modify the structure of the carbons, from microporous to mesoporous, while the use of copolymers with a range of molar composition PAN/PMMA between 10/90 and 47/53 allows the obtainment of carbons with different degrees of porosity.

  • Left ventricular fibrosis is important for understanding arrhythmias in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP), and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging identifies this using late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) techniques, which currently lack standardized protocols.
  • A study with 66 MVP patients assessed LV fibrosis using different methods, including semi-automated gray-scale thresholding based on standard deviations and compared them to visual assessments.
  • Among the techniques, the 5-standard deviation gray-scale thresholding showed the best correlation with visual assessments and demonstrated high reproducibility in quantifying LGE in these patients.

  • Unstable complete atrioventricular block is a serious condition needing immediate treatment, usually until a pacemaker can be implanted.
  • While transcutaneous pacing is one option, it can be painful and sometimes ineffective, leading to consideration of drug therapies like atropine, dopamine, and epinephrine.
  • A study showed that isoprenaline is safe and more effective than dopamine in treating unstable third-degree AV block, improving patient outcomes and reducing the need for temporary pacing.

Background: Pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) assessment is fundamental for managing dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients. Although cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has become the gold-standard imaging technique for evaluating cardiac chamber volume and function, PCWP is not routinely assessed with CMR. Therefore, this study aimed to validate the left atrial expansion index (LAEI), a LA reservoir function parameter able to estimate filling pressure with echocardiography, as a novel CMR-measured parameter for non-invasive PCWP estimation in DCM patients.

Background: The Petersen' index reflects an excess of myocardial trabeculation which is not a specific morpho-functional feature of left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) cardiomyopathy, but a "phenotypic trait" even observed in association with other myocardial diseases and over-loading conditions. The present study was designed to evaluate the relation between a critical thinning of compact layer and the development of systolic dysfunction and LVNC cardiomyopathy.

Methods: We compared CMR morpho-functional features and measurements of LV wall thickness using a 17 segment model of a cohort of patients fulfilling the Petersen criterion for LVNC with LV systolic dysfunction versus those of a cohort of age- and sex-matched controls with LVNC and preserved LV systolic function.

Background: Most recent cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) can safely undergo a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) scan under certain conditions, but metal artifacts may degrade image quality. The aim of this study was to assess the overall diagnostic yield of CMR and the extent of metal artifacts in a multicenter, multivendor study on CIED patients referred for CMR.

Methods: We analyzed 309 CMR scans from 292 patients (age 57 ± 16 years, 219 male) with an MR-conditional pacemaker ( = 122), defibrillator (n = 149), or loop recorder (n = 38); CMR scans were performed in 10 centers from 2012 to 2020; MR-unsafe implants were excluded.

Rainfall erosivity (EI) is crucial to characterize the rainfall effect on soil erosion based on storm intensity. Its calculation is highly sensitive to the time resolution used, in which using rainfall data at fixed time intervals (ΔΤ) >30-min results in large underestimation. Therefore, there is a need to explore the difference and correlation between EI calculated at different ΔΤ.
